Hello, welcome to TomCoyote forum and sorry for the wait. I don't see much in either log, clutter we can remove. What make you think soproc.exe is on the computer? Hre is what that is: http://www.bleepingc...NnAj-13396.html Do a search or navigate to it. BleepingComputer says it is here: C:\Program Files\SoftwareOnline\ Delete the file if you find it. We can run some scans to have a look if you wish. Let's do this:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

turn off Microsoft AntiSpyware or it may block HJT

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(clutter)
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html
If you can't see Prefetch, use these instructions: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.
Run for a day, then let me know of any issues.

6) IE issues are not always caused by malware, here are some troubleshooting ideas:
http://www.microsoft...s/IEtopten.mspx

Thanks...pskelley

Pskelley,
First of all, thanks very much for all the help.

I already have been Running Spy Bot 1.04 and Ad-aware 1.06. *I did the recommended (HJT) settings changes for AD-aware and located a previously undetected threat.

I downloaded and ran the Ewido app. It located more threats (mostly cookies), but also identified quarantine files in CA EZtrust suite. I did not think these were a real threat since they were being stored by the CA software, but I allowed them to be removed anyway because I did not think it would be of any harm to do so. (Afterwards, I was reconsidering this decision because I was not sure how/if it would affect EZTrust’s functions.)

I then did steps four and five as you instructed. I deleted everything in the Prefetch folder. This was a good time to do so, seeing as I have removed a lot of programs lately in order to make my system more efficient.

Here are the log-files:

Good morning Sean, Looking over your feedback first. I see nothing in the ewido log that should not have been removed. Just like the backup area in Ad-aware and Recovery in Spybot, the quarantine in your AV and I also see MAS quarantine in the ewido scan, all of these areas should be cleaned out once you are sure what they removed is bad. I usually let a week or so go by, but if something is removed I investigate the heck out of it because I want to know how it got through all of the barriers I have set up. I do not even allow cookies, I override handling proceedures in my browser for the valid few cookies needed. The New.net items are a hijacker, here is a little information about it: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
The first item is bad but it is in System Restore and not a problem unless you use SR, then it would get back on your computer as would any bad item backed up in those files, we will clean out SR. Since it appears most cokies are in Firefox, here is information about how to control them:
http://privacy.getne...fdisablecookies
http://www.mozilla.o..._priv_help.html
I you need similiar information for Internet Explorer, make me aware.
ewido also did not show any surprises.

Prefetch, I understand your computer slows a little until Windows repopulates the folder, but I have seen bad stuff running from there to hide and most information I have seen says it should be cleaned out from time to time. Do a little googling for your own information.

Before I look at the HJT log, I wondered about the soproc.exe item? I see no mention of it in your comments in response to my questions? Is this an issue that no longer exists? After I look at the HJT log, I will offer some solutions about the Internet Explorer problems that may help. I wonder if any error messages are displayed when you are "Experiencing intermittent IE6 crashes" ?

I see no evidence of any "malware in your HJT log, I do have a question or two, and a comment.

I see both of these programs, if you are running two antivirus programs, it IS NOT a good thing. I suggest if this is the case, that you choose one and uninstall the other. Just as I would also suggest since you have SP2, that you run only one firewall at a time.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
C:\Program Files\CA\eTrust Internet Security Suite\eTrust EZ Antivirus

ewido is a great program but it does use some resources.
Once the trial is over you can update and use the scanner
for as long as you wish, but unless you purchase it you should turn it of
completely so it does not run unless you start it manually.

As far as your issues go with IE, this information may help: I suggest you try this first to see if perhaps a corrupt or missing file is causing the problems. You may need your Windows CD.
Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter. Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You will need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.

Many things beside malware can cause problems. http://www.microsoft...s/IEtopten.mspx

Since you have no malware showing in HJT,

Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I meant to tell you about… soproc.exe was a file that was removed (or at least disabled) from the startup list last month when I first noticed my machine slowing, along with the IE6 freezing/crashing problem. When I looked in the registry I found a folder called: “SOPoc_DAP” was still there (and is now) under: HKEY_Local_Machine>Software>Microsoft>Sharedtools>MSConfig>startupreg.

I have been hesitant to make any changes to the registry without a registry cleaner that will correctly backup the files for me. The remaining SOPoc_DAP files have not been identified by CC or any other registry utilities I have tried. I will probably wind up removing them manually with regedit.

If you would like to know more about it, this MS newsgroup link should give you an idea of what has been done so far:

Before I did get the “IE needs to close…” message, but more recently when I have multiple IE windows open, one of them will freeze and spike the CPU usage, forcing me to slowly close out of IE - (or else I’ll close one IE window and the others close automatically). Since yesterday, I have been running upwards of eleven IE windows with no problems except occasionally the browser does not display all images, or leaves out html – such as with the yahoo mail inbox screen.

I have now uninstalled Avast4, opting for EZ Antivirus just because the CA suite is providing my firewall. As far as I know, Windows Firewall is turned off and CA Etrust should be the only one that is on. A few months ago I went with CA software and before that I was using Symantec software (which functioned flawlessly). When it came time to renew my subscription, I decided to try CA because they were having a promotional trial. I’m not sure exactly when I installed Alwil Avast4 – I wanted another AV scanner just for custom scans of downloaded files. It was not supposed to be in active protection mode.

I have noticed that often CA’s Pest Patrol anti-spyware will try to update and if I have other browser windows open on the top of my screen, I get an error message saying that “Etrust could not update due to user action”. I often have to manually update the program because the automatic update failed.

I didn’t know about sfc /scannow... good utility! I just ran it so we’ll see what happens. Also, as-in the # 6 link you provided, I adjusted the graphics hardware accelerator to check if it has any affect.

Again, thank you so very much Phil!

Hi Sean, A good registry cleaner is not a bad idea. You just need to follow the directions:

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Download RegSeeker here: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

You can check to see what is running in the Security Center of your Control Panel. If you ever want to dump them all and run a good free av, try this one:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php and here is a good free online scanner: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Safe surfing...Phil
