I'm new to all this stuff. I keep getting the Winfixer popup and can't get rid of them with Spybot search and destroy nor Ad-AwareSE. I would like to know how to get rid of these problems and what I need to do to prevent them from reappearing.

Hi,

A few problems in ordre:

1) Did not find : O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnlj.dll

2) Did not find : C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnlj.dll

3) Did not find any : vtstq - vtstq.dll

4) Could not run ActiveScan : I got an error downloading. So I deactivated Microsoft AntiSpyware with the same results.

So I have no results from the activeScan. So here are the results from the other two.

I deleted the whole directory from the bold on . C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll

Thank you for your efforts. I still need help.

Pierre

Fixing Registry
————————————————————————————–
Hi pgc_help:
You may want to copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work.

Please take special notice of the instructions concerning Killbox and use it to remove any files that cannot be found, or deleted.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
  7. Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

    Next:

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
    http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
    TrendMicro HouseCall
    eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
    Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
    Reboot when done.

    Next:
Please install, update, then configure Ad-Aware SE to the following directions. Run it and let it remove anything it asks about.
Install and how to use Ad-aware SE
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

    Next:
We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

    Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
    Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…lion&pf=desktop
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…lion&pf=desktop
    O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {df3007cc-e159-4dfb-80f5-cc6434286dd0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpcdwwpd.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnlj - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnlj.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtstq - vtstq.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06\bin\ssv.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpcdwwpd.dll

Exit Explorer, and then, please reboot.
If you were unable to find, or delete any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

    Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not change anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Hi,

Went through teh steps. Here are the results

When I ran TrendMicro Housecall, one item remained that I did not know what to do with

"(MS04-028) Buffer Overrun in JPEG Processing (GDI+) Could Allow Code Execution (833987)

Deleting the file near the end of the procedure.

The first. directory C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_06 did not exist. I had deleted it in teh provious posting.

As for C:\WINDOWS\system32\wpcdwwpd.dll, I did not find it. Donwloaded pocket killbox and when I added this file, after choosing Yes to rebbot I got the following message.

Pending FileRenameOperations registry data has been removed by external process.

And the dialog box reappears. The system did not reboot.

We seem to be having some trouble removing some of the entries. Please do the following, then run HJT again and check for these same entries. If found, then please go into SAFE MODE, run HJT in SAFE MODE and remove the entries again, while remaining in SAFE MODE. Then reboot back into Normal Mode.

Close all Windows leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not change anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Hi,

I followed your instructions. I turned off Microsoft antispyware as requested.

I ran HJT after shuting down MS antispyware and did not find any of the R1, O2 or O20. The HJT log in red is the result.

I then rebooted in safe mode, ran HJT and again did not find any. The HJT log is in blue.

What is next?

Thank you,
Pierre

Hi pgc_help;

All I can say is that it is unnatural, for those entries to just dissapear.

If only they would all go so easily.

Your Hijack This logs both look to be clean. If you are having no problems,
I would suggest the following.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
