My desktop system has rogue processes starting but when I kill them with TaksManager ort WinPatrol they restart but change there name. I guess there is a calling program which keeps doing this but I can't find it. I also have some site called "The Best Offers" which pops up every 2-3 web pages that I click to. It is listed in my Add/Remove Programs and I have tried to delete it, yet it sends me to a website that is supposed to delete it, and that has not worked. AHHHH !!!

Any help would be appreciated. I have purchased the Professional edition of Ad-Aware and downloaded Spybot and nothing seems to work. I have attached my latest Hijack This log. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi and Welcome to TomCoyote forum. This is a nasty infection called at times Aurora/Nail. Looks like a trojan also called epolvy that morphs and returns if the instructions are not followed exactly.

Thanks to Swandog46 and the team that worked on this fix.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan. Make sure you save that first log, I must see it. This is a start, we will have more to do. My suggestion is that you keep this computer offline as much as possible until we get it cleaned up. This junk seems to attract more.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks again for all your help.
Good job MC  you hit the "Nail" on it's head  I see TampaBayRR, I'm in Clearwater, where are you? First I will look at the ewido scan report.

ewido security suite - Scan report Created on: 1:58:49 AM, 11/30/2005
The first item: F:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Includes\Hosts.sbs -> Trojan.Qhost.ew : Ignoredis a trojan you ignored. That trojan needs to go and the easiest way is to run ewido again and delete it this time. Once you do that, let ewido run, it will often find a few new things as the computer get cleaner. I need to see the scan report once you are done.
For the different users look to see where those cookies are being stored and add that area to your routine maintenance. It might be a good thing if I look at a log for each user. Mark them plainly if you post.
Here is some helpful information for controlling the cookies:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…acy/config.mspx

As you can see ewido killed a log of nasty junk, the infection was complements of the folks at BetterInternet

1) WinPatrol will block the fix we must make, turn it off completely until done.

2) Make sure Spybot is up to date and run it removing anything located. Use this link if needed: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

4) RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html
If you can't find the Prefetch folder, use these instructions: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

5) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Hopefully this will take care of all the bad stuff. There are some additional possibilities for improving your performance if you are interested.

Thanks…pskelley

Sorry for the delay. Those Ewido scans took hours to run last night, so I did not get to the Spybot step and the rest until this evening. I will be posting the Ewido scans for each user (3) and the HJT log.

I was unable to complete step 4 as my PC is Windows 2000, so I do not have a PreFetch folder. All of my WIndows hidden system files are displayed and I did a search and could not find the folder. I read the article you linked at it appeared to me to be for Windows XP. I guess I am a little behind.

A couple of comments on the HJT log. After I did Spybot and then I ran HJT the entries for sidesearch no longer appeared in the System Scan, they were the R1 and R0 entries at the top, so I did not delete anything there. Also I noticed a line that you did not ask me to delete and it looks supicious, it's in this log as well:
O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/4047/ftp…23/cpbrkpie.cab

What do you think?

Finally My account and my wife's account have a strange program that WinPatrol picked up as wanting to start, which I have denied called BackWeb-8876480.exe. I can't find the program. I will admit I have not checked if it is still trying to start since I did the HJT Fix sice I am now running as administrator.

Thank's again for all your help.

No problem, I realize these scans take time, ewido scans will improve but will always require 30 to 40 minutes. Let me look at your feedback before commenting on the logs, thanks.

I will be posting the Ewido scans for each user (3) and the HJT log.

I need HJT logs for each user, I do not need ewido scans,

I was unable to complete step 4 as my PC is Windows 2000

I apologize, I work with XP so much and ewido only runs on XP and 2000 so I had ewido on the mind when I asked for the Prefetch cleaning, as long as CCleaner was run as instructed in the tutorial, your temp and TIF junk should be gone.

A couple of comments on the HJT log. After I did Spybot and then I ran HJT the entries

I like to run my scans first and often they will remove stuff. I prefer to kill it twice than not at all. As this stuff is removed, lines tend to move around as the writers do not want their junk removed. That 016 line can be a problem and will be removed.

The Logitech Desktop Messenger gets installed bundled with other Logitech products like WebCams, a mouse, etc. and most folks don't read the EULA agreement. I will remove it for you. See this: http://www.pcpitstop.com/spycheck/know.asp

Cookies are a part of computer life. It depends on how hard you will work to get rid of them and some are required for banking, passwords, etc. In the beginning it is a little work to deny the bad one, but like a spam filter, them go away with a little work. Here is information to help you handle them:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…acy/config.mspx The same information applies to the final ewido scan you posted.

We must turn WinPatrol off, it will block the fix we have to make with HJT. I do not use the program, but you can try this: right click the running icon , and exit.
Be offline when you do this since you are turning of your protection.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

(let me say that you may remove any DPF/016 item if you wish. If valid, they will be put back the next time you visit the site)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

(If you do not use the Desktop Manager…this should get rid of the BackWeb updates also)
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe
Navigate to and delete only the folder highlited in red

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer.

If you wish to post any HJT logs from other users, feel free, but I would like to see this one again before I turn you loose.

Thanks…Phil
I think we are getting better. Sorry about posting the wrong logs. I have posted HJT for each of us.

On a side note I just moved from Tampa bak to the Baltimore, MD area. My family and I were living in New Port Richey (Trinity) Area.

Thank's again for all your help.

No problem, doing a remote fix like this is not the easiest thing to do. I am originally from Western Maryland but lived many years in Baltimore, still have two sisters and a brother there. Let me take a look at these logs. There is still a lot of work to do.

ADMINISTRATOR'S ACCOUNT >>> this can be done once the other two logs are clean.

I see no malware, here are a few possible resource savers:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Synchronization Manager] mobsync.exe /logon

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AudioHQ] C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\AudioHQ\AHQTB.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP AutoIndexer] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\LaserJet 33xx\hppautoindexer.exe
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1434.html
If you make any changes do it one or two at a time and wait a few days to see how it runs.

Use these online free scanners if you wish to check anything before you remove it:

http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html

Open Add Remove programs and uninstall C:\Program Files\Alset\HelpExpress\ , C:\Program Files\Privacy Champion\ and anything else you know should not be there.

(WinPatol must be off for the HJT fix to work)

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id=

see this>>> http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1392.html

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [window.exe] C:\WINNT\system32\window.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\Alset\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Privacy Champion\ Folder

C:\WINNT\system32\kbdsf.exe >>> file

C:\WINNT\system32\window.exe >>> file

C:\WINNT\system32\197_150_ni_6.exe >>> file

C:\WINNT\system32\198_150_ni_4.exe >>> file

Empty the recycle bin and restart the computer. I wish to say I have never seen this much infection in a user like this where it did not show in the Admin account.

I don't like this http://websearch.drsnsrch.com/sidesearch.cgi?id= showing up again, we may have to use a special fix for it, unless it goes this time.

Now make sure you sign in to the Admin account. Hate to ask this, I knew you had a bad infection but I did not know it was this bad. I would like you to run these in this order.

Spybot
Ad-aware
Ewido and post the log
CCleaner, might not hurt to run the cleaner in each user.

Now post all three logs and the ewido scan results. Give my any feedback you think I should have.

Thanks…Phil
Here are my latest logs. I ran Adaware and Spybot under each account. Both found more junk in my wife's and my personal account. The final Adaware and Spybot run had Spybot coming up clean but AdAware found a couple of things. Ewido found some cookies. Thanks for your help.

Appears clean of malware this morning. I want to mention while I am thinking of it, ewido is a good program but it uses some resources which is expected. Unless you purchase it, once the trial is over I suggest you make sure it is turned off. You can keep and update the scanner for as long as you like.
