Hello. Firstly jus want to say awesome forums. I've been reding through a lot of the posts and awesome work indeed.

Anyway, recently (since installing the new version of MSN) my pc has gone totally weird. Spyware (specifically the winfix carp**) seems to have infested my computer and I am unable to remove it. My AVP (norton) has also said it's picked up something called Trojan.FixUndo in the file sstqq.dll and I've been unable to remove this file or fix the problem. So I come to the professionals. :D

Please find below my log file from HijackThis. I'd really appreciate any and all help on this problem.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do indeed have the Vundo trojan. Before I remove it I need some help from you. How fast we get this done depends on how fast you respond to directions. Here is what I need now:

1) Move HJT from the Desktop, I prefer it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instruction use this: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm

2) Click on Format at the top of your notepad and turn off Word Wrap. I need the log single spaced like all of the others, look at a few. My scanners can't work with the Word Wrap format.

3) Post the log using copy/paste as the others you just looked at, do not use code or quote.

Do these three things and post a new HJT log. I will be notified and respond as soon as possible after that.

Thanks...pskelley

Thanks for fixing the log for me :) You have other nasty infections and this cleanup is not going to be easy. It is important that the directions be followed exactly. Here is what we are looking at:
Win32.ConHook.l Trojan-Downloader - responsible for installing a variant of Vundo adware
OpenWares "ContextuAd" adware
Vundo.B adware variant
this: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) X lsass.exe Added by the W32/Tilebot-AK WORM! Note: This is not the legitimate Windows process lsass.exe (Which is always found in the System32 folder). This worm file is found in the Windows or Winnt folder. You need to read under all tabs to see what Sophos has to say about what this worm has dones to your system so you can correct the damage.
http://www.sophos.co...2tilebotak.html
this: Windows Smrss Service (Windows Smrss Service) X smrss.exe Added by the W32/Tilebot-X WORM! Note: This worm\trojan file is found in the Windows or Winnt folder.

These are both running in your Services and you can check them here if you wish: http://castlecops.com/O23.html
I know of no easy way to remove this junk and it is going to take several steps which may include some trial and error. I also need to say that these trojans attract others and may add to your problems when you are online. I strongly suggest you keep this computer offline as much as possible until we kill this stuff. If you want my help, this is how we will begin.

1) This is very important. I see evidence of McAfee: http://castlecops.com/o23list-119.html and Symantec/Norton: Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service These two powerful antivirus programs will conflict and make you much less safe that if you run one good one and maintain it properly. This very first thing you need to do is choose the one you wish to use and uninstall the other. Please do that before you move ahead. Then update the one you kept and run a complete system scan. Let me see the results of that scan.

2) C:\Programs\Audio\Winamp\winamp.exe <<< this file in red is scanning as a problem, and it may or may not be. I need you to use two or more of these free online scans to find out. Post the results of the scans for me to see.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

3) I need to know if you put these two items in your hosts file? I will schedule removal, but if your know what they are you may pass over that removal.
O1 - Hosts: 205.134.176.246 js1.hitbox.com
O1 - Hosts: 205.134.176.246 stats.hitbox.com

4) We need to disable and delete those two bad service. You may be able to do them at the same time with HJT, if not do them one at a time.

A) Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to Local Security Authority Subsystem Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type lsass and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

B) Disable the offending Service
Click Start < Run and type services.msc.
Scroll down to Windows Smrss Service and right click on it.
Click Properties and under Service Status click Stop, then under Startup Type change it to Disabled.

Delete the offending Service
Open HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service.
In the Delete window, type Windows Smrss Service and press OK.
OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

5) This fix is specifically for the Vundo.B trojan, follow the directions carefully of the fix will fail.

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://www.zpecialof....asp?keyword=%s

O23 - Service: Windows Smrss Service - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Post the logs requested along with any information I asked for earlier and any feedback you have. There will, no doubt, be more to do.

Thanks...pskelley
