My temp directory is being filled with tmp files CC1A.TMP, CC1B.TMP, etc. Opening each tmp file in notepad reveals an email that has been send to an unkown (to me) email address. Generally 25 or 30 files are being generated at a time.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Mike

Click here for Instructions on how to Scan with Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware

You need to move Hijackthis instructions here.

Download System Security Suite v1.04
here

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop. We may need it later.

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware.
Follow their process tree. Right click on the file and go to Properties.
Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:
If it's from some name you never heard of or if it's blank,
Please check them for removal and delete the file in bold also.

Reboot in safe mode. Close all Browser and Program Windows.
Have HijackThis fix the following. Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Updates] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysupdates.exe
O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} - http://components.me...MetaStream3.cab

You may need to set you computer to show hidden files. Click here for Instructions.
Then click start>my computer>local disk
(then follow the path) or Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:
Delete the following file(s) listed.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysupdates.exe

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Run Pocket Killbox, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot.
Paste the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot answer Yes let the system reboot.
Here are Instructions for deleting multiple files with Pocket Killbox. If you were not able to find them.

Then Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

Go here and run online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner

Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.

Also please describe how your computer behaves now.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I didn't follow the first paragraph of your instructions about the randomly named files but I did the rest. Apparently the sysupdates.exe file was not a system file afterall. I no longer get the long string of tmp files and the behavior on startup is much better. Many thanks!
Here's my Hijackthis log now.
