Hi, I am using my girlfriends PC and she is bombarded with pop ups from Hotbar and the computer takes about 7 minutes to load on start up. I downloaded Adaware and removed 150+ alerts, could someone please take a look at the HJT log and give a verdict please?

Regards,

Phil

Hi Phil and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Quite a mess here and it might take a while to clean it up. If you wish to do so follow the directions in the posted order.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open Add Remove programs in the Control Panel. Look for Hotbar or P2P Networking and uninstall them.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

6) Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\HbTools\ >>> folder

C:\PROGRAM FILES~1\RXTOOL~1\ >>> folder

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ksgnwmsm.exe >>> file

C:\WINDOWS\system32\P2P Networking\ >>> folder

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

7) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how your are running now.

Thanks...pskelley

OK Phil, I can wait. I just want to say she is fairly infected and these infections have a way of inviting in more. Since it is not like wine that gets better with age, I would suggest you contact her and let her know the situation and that she may want to stay offline until you can work on her problems. Thanks...Phil :wavey:

Hi pskelley,

I have carried out the operations to the best of my ability but i had trouble updating Spybot and could not find the files in step 6 even with hidden files enabled.

My girlfriend is using Norton antivirus and firewall on this computer and is having a lot of problems, I use AVG and Windows firewall on my machine and have no real problems, should she change to windows and AVG? And could you shed any light on how this computer got so infected and what steps she can take to stop it happening in the future?

Hello Phil, I'll know more after I look at the logs, let me comment quickly on your feedback. First Spybot, if you are getting a Bad Checksum error, try another mirror, here is some information:

A good antivirus program and a firewall is needed, It is a matter of choice from there. I have three computers. I run AVG and Zone Alarm on one, McAfee and Zone Alarm on the SP1 computer and McAfee with the SP2 firewall on the third. Sorry I can't help you more with that. As far as shedding light on how, if I had that answer me and Bill Gates would count our money together  I'll have some information from experts in the malware field that I hope will help. This recent item from PCPitStop says a lot: http://www.pcpitstop...ycheck/know.asp

I will start by saying again that she was badly infected (it can be much worse) and she does need some help. I also want to say I tend to overkill, so often a tool or scan has removed an item before HJT gets to it. I prefer to kill it twice than not at all :D Let's look at the logs.

You did a great job with ewido, you need to delete those backups as soon as you are sure they are not needed. I saw nothing but nasty junk and a lot of it. Show Kelly where those bad cookies are hiding so she can clean them often. Here is some information if you wish better control: http://www.mvps.org/...002/cookies.htm

Your HJT log is clean great job  Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Thanks pskelley  The computer seems to be running faster now but the 2 meg broadband is very slow but i suppose that is something she will have to take up with her ISP. I will have a look at the links and see what else i can pick up. Best regards, Phil
