[Dawgnu]

[/font][/b] Recently picked up alot of virus's and spyware. I've been able to rid of all but at least one that has taken over my Internet Explorer. It had changed the home page to some porno site, I clicked default which brought it back to MSN. I've run Mcafee Virus. AdAware Pro, PC Bug Doctor, AOL Spyware and also a free scan by TrendMicro. Still getting popups. I've deleted Popup V2A[2].htm several times and it keeps returning. I've read instructions when I found your website and it said to go ahead run a scan and post it so it is as follows:

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note: If you get an error similar to:
autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos etc etc , or a 16 bit app error etc etc'
Go here and use the appropriate fix for your system then the program again.

Then click on the button that says run a system scan
Then place a check next to the following items and click "fix"

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Unzip hoster to an own folder, eg C:\Hoster
Start Hoster.exe, click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

Then open the L2MFix folder present on your desktop and doubleclick second.bat
Your desktop will disappear and the tool will scan and restore some settings.
Notepad will open with a log afterwards. copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Hi Scott,

Try this first:

Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

regsvr32 initpki.dll

click OK
You should see a message saying "DllRegisterServer ... succeeded" afterwards.

Perform the same for next commands:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll

Let me know if that fixed the problem.

Wanted to get back to you and let you know that I have done as instructed, everything came back "succeeded". The problem I was having with connection to AOL was on the AOL side.
I spoke with them last night and they have a known issue that is suppose to be corrected today.
I finally got my computer back thanks to you. This site rocks!!!! I really appreciate your knowledge and all the help that everyone gave me yesterday. Everyone helping me yesterday showed alot of patients and spent many hours helping me. Thank you, Scott

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. Because a lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!
