here's some supplemental info: Spybot is finding, and apparently removes, but it comes back, the following: (all start w/ "WindowsSecurityCenter...) ...UpdateDisableNotify ...AntivirusDisableNotify ...AntivirusDisableOverride ...FirewallDisableNotify ...FirewallOverride ...SP@Update I check and fix problem, but on reboot they're back. Something keeps disabling (unchecking) Firewall in Start-connect to-show all connections-Earthlink properties-advanced tab, "protect my comp." Hope this helps Little screens in toolbar always sending and recvg data help?

W32/Rbot-AJA is a worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.
W32/Rbot-AJA spreads to other network computers by exploiting common buffer overflow vulnerabilites, including:
LSASS (MS04-011)
RPC-DCOM (MS04-012)
MSSQL (MS02-039) (CAN-2002-0649)
W32/Rbot-AJA runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.
W32/Rbot-AJA includes functionality to:
- steal confidential information including Internet Account Manager and Hotmail user accounts and passwords
- carry out DDoS flooder attacks
- silently download, install and run new software
- access the internet and communicate with a remote server via HTTP
- act as a SOCKS4 proxy

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.



Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find lsass

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.



Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

safe mode, run services.msc

find lsass
highlight it.
was already stopped
Right-Click on the service, 'Properties'
'General' tab
'Start-up Type' box
click on 'Disabled'
'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

then i ran HJT (still in safe mode) didn't see O23 - Service: Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (lsass) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe in the list.

restarted (not in safe mode)
ran HJT again, still didn't see that entry on the list

at this moment, i don't see my little computer screen in the tool bar going bananas!
also, CTRL-ALT-DEL PROCESSES shows "lsass.exe" SYSTEM running memory usage 1008K, but i've seen that in there before... before i followed your advice above, i remember there were 2 running (lsass, that is)

Lets clean-up the left overs.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL



I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

well, so far, so good! the only thing regseeker didn't want to delete (1 item only) was TurboTax Premier 2004.LNK (apparently once upon a time on my desktop) it found 889 entries first time, 451, then 3, then 1 and can't find it in it's heart to delete that solitary item. probably not going to ruin my life. the computer seems to be moving A LOT FASTER now? was my registry just polluted, or what? still only see the one "lsass" process running and the little screens are quiet... i'm hoping i'm good to go. opened ContPan and Add/Remove Prog.s, no prob. email works, even my CAD software. Didn't do a comprehensive "does everything work" yet, but the critical ones are. This forum, as you know, is awesome!

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

i'm not sure how to check this (security center) but it might be worth doing. regardless, spybot's not finding those probs anymore.
It's been a long day of crime fighting, but i think i've got some good allies. per your advice on my last post, i dnldd AVG anti-virus, it found 5 (drsmartload, mostly) virii, says there gone now; and Panda found some goodies:

You should only have one Anti-Virus running at one time, so you need to use Add/Remove Programs and remove one of them.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.
