NOTES:
My computer is a single-user PC clone, Celeron 366 MZ, running on Windows 98 SE with all critical updates from Microsoft installed, and a dial-up modem to connect to the internet. I am using Trend Micro’s PC-cillin 2003 continuously updated for virus protection, the current edition of Zone Alarm’s firewall, and a pop-up ad suppressor from Infinity Internet, which is my ISP. I have System Suite 2000 software utilities package which I was using mainly to clean-up unnecessary files and for automatically fixing registry errors.
Prior to shutting down the computer on April 2, I noticed a new and unfamiliar desktop icon entitled “Click here.” I checked the properties for the icon and it turned out to be an internet porn site. I then deleted it.
The next thing I noticed was that System Suite 2000 started crashing every time I tried using it to clean up temp files or fix registry items. Then I noticed that when I tried to go to frequently visited internet sites, the URL’s were being re-directed as though I was clicking through a third-party link. Here are some examples:
The pop-up ad suppressor has been overcome by this hijackware I am also now seeing frequent pop-up screens with porno or sex-related messages. One of these is an ad for the Adult Friend Finder site and others with the following URL’s in the properties:
http://453.us/sites/clickcash-m/
http://www.clicktracking.info/errorloading/a80.html
The computer has also become very slow.
In an attempt to correct the damage, here is what I have so far done:
1) Deleted a number of suspicious looking files that were created on April 2.
2) Scanned the system for viruses using Trend Micro’s PC-cillin with all current updates.
3) Scanned the system with the currently updated version of AdAware .
4) Scanned the system with currently updated Spybot and deleted 31 malware entries identified.
5) Scanned the system with currently updated Spykiller and deleted 8 other malware entries it identified.
After the 5 steps above, the only improvement was that the Ebay URL no longer generates a redirect. On the web address line of IE.
6 Scanned the system with Hijack.this to produce the log below.
Help with this is very much appreciated.
