Hope someone can look this over for me. Opening applications takes a long time. Also shut down takes a really long time. Here is my log....

seangos,

Sorry about the delay, there are more people with infected computers than there are people to fix them.

Lets do this...

Enable windows to Show All Files and Folders

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Run HJT Scan Only, the only window you should have open is HJT, put a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msvcirt] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msvcirt.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [196_150_ni] C:\WINDOWS\System32\196_150_ni.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

While in Safemode, lets look for and delete the following files in RED

C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msvcirt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\196_150_ni.exe

Also scroll to C:\ windows\prefetch and delete all the contents of the Prefetch folder, but not the Prefetch folder itself.

Reboot Normally

Use the links in my signature to download, install and run both Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4 and Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06 It important that you reboot your system after running one program before you run the next. Here sre the setup instructions for both programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.

Download and Install CCleaner

* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

When your done, post a new HJT log please.

I followed all your steps:

While in Safemode,
I made the specified HJT fixes.
I was able to find and delete the file
C:\WINDOWS\system32\searchbar.html
I could not find the following 2 files, thus no deletion:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msvcirt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\196_150_ni.exe
I did find but did not delete:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\197_150_ni_7.exe please let me know if I should delete this.
I went to the Prefetch folder and deleted all items but not the folder

Ran Spybot S&D 1.4. It found 2 items:
executable: C:\Program Files\hp center\\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe
Program Directory: C:\Program Files\BackWeb
I did not delete either as I believe BackWeb is used with my HP support center. Please advise.

Ran Ad-Aware 1.06, found and corrected 11 "critical items"

CCleaner. Done. You should note that the link in your message to CCleaner did not work. You may want to double check it. Not a problem for me, I found the website.

Here is a new HJT log

seangos,

You have one suspicious line that I am unsure about, lets run a couple of online virus scanners, it looked like they removed it in other posts.

Run Panda first and then Housecall, have them set to Auto Clean if it gives you the option. Panda will also give you the option to save a report, do so and paste the report in this thread along with a new HJT log.

Panda Active Scan
Trendmicro Housecall

The link to CCleaner has been fixed, thank you.

Another question, should I delete the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\197_150_ni_7.exe ? This does not show up in my HJT log but I am concerned that it might cause later problems. Please advise

Hello Again,

Yes, delete this one, you may have to do it from Safemode.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\197_150_ni_7.exe

Its always best to reboot between scans, so yes, go ahead and reboot.

Hi Ken, I went into safemode and deleted the file 197_150_ni_7.exe I also ran the Panda Active Scan. It did not offer to "auto clean". I'll put that log in a separate post. I ran Housecall. It did not offer to save the report but I did a cut and paste. It will be ugly, but I will also post that separately. It did offer to clean. The scan said there were 4 viruses detected. After selecting clean, I got the following results 0 viruses cleaned, 3 viruses deleted... I wonder what happened to the fourth one? Finally, I did a HJT scan. That will be a separate post as well.

Good Morning Seangos :D

The virus scans didn't get rid of what I hoped it would but now we know that the line I was unsure of is a bad one, so lets do this.

You will have to do this in Safemode for the fix to be effective so you may want to print out these instructions. Also make sure that you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders.

1.

* Reboot into Safemode
* Open Hijackthis.
* Go to Misc Tools > Processor Manager.
* Look for this line --> C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfcfiles.exe
* Highlight the line ONLY and click on Kill Process

2.

* Now in HJT, click on the back button , then Config, you will still be in Misc Tools
* Now open Delete an NT Service
* Type this exactly into the box sfcfiles
* Click OK

3.

* Click on the back button and run Scan Only remember the only window you should have open is HJT, put a checkmark in the following entry and click on Fix Checked

O23 - Service: sfcfiles - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfcfiles.exe

* Close out HJT

4.

Look for the following file in RED and delete it if still present.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfcfiles.exe

Reboot normally and post a new log please.

Ken :D

Hi Ken, I could not perform the process you defined. I went into Safemode, launched HJT, went to Misc Tools>Processor Manager but the file C:\WINDOWS/System32\sfcfiles.exe did not show up. I double checked that windows was enabled to show all files and folders. I went ahead and tried step 2 but after entering sfcfiles, I got the following message; "The service 'sfcfiles' is enabled and/or running. Disable it first, using HijackThis itself (from the scan results) or the Services.msc window" I tried to figure this out but was unsuccessful. I also did a CTRL+ALT+DEL, checked the running processes and did not find sfcfiles. I then rebooted to normal mode, and tried the same process. This time HJT did show the file C:\WINDOWS/System32\sfcfiles.exe I was unsure whether to continue and erred on the side of caution.... didn't perform the rest of the process. Please advise.... oh and have a nice Thanksgiving!!!

Seangos, This is a new one and these infections get trickier all the time, so I learned from this, go ahead and follow all my instructions but in normal mode this time. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. :D Ken
