Hey, I keep getting WinFix 2005 pop-ups, and a message saying that ssqpn.dll is trying to run or something like that. I was hoping someone would be able to help me rid my machine of this. Here's my log...

Hi Mike and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help, you have a trojan called Vundo. We have a fix but you must follow the directions carefully. You also have another Winlogon item that may be L2m and it has a missing file so it may remove with HJT? The only thing I can do is proceed with the Vundo fix and see what happens. If that sounds ok to you then do this:

Thanks to Atribune and any others who helped with this fix.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.
  It should look like this

• At this point press enter one time.
  
  
  
• Next you will see:

• The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.

• Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic. We may have more to do?

Hello Mike, Thanks for your feedback, and I wish to say this is a very nasty trojan that is hard to remove. The fix I gave you is successful almost all of the time when it is executed according to the directions. I will also say that this line: O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnli - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnli.dll (file missing) is probably another trojan called Look2me and the fact that the file is missing usually means other attempts have been made with other tools prior to me seeing a HJT log. These entries:
Could not delete C:/WINDOWS/system32/ssqpn.dll.
Could not delete C:/WINDOWS/system32/npqss.*.
In the vundofix.txt file seem to indicate that the fix failed. I have no way of knowing this because the HJT log was posted in safe mode and if you used HJT to remove the lines it will not show up until after the reboot has occured. Please see these instructions:

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below

Please run another HJT log and look to see if the items you removed with VundoFix V2.15 by Atri and removed with HJT are still there. If they are, please do the fix again from the top and make sure you reboot when you are told to do so. There is no reason to run CleanUp or ActiveScan, once you reboot, post the results of the Vundofix and a new HJT log which will not be in safe mode.

Hi Mike, Sorry about the few problems we are having, we will defeat this thing. It looks to me that the trojan has been killed and we just need to get it out of the HJT log. Can you give me a little information about the performance of the computer now? Are you still getting messages? How is the machine running?
There is a very good possiblility that spyware programs you have installed are stopping HJT from removing the lines from your log. Before we start dragging out bigger guns, let's look at that.
I also notice you have no folder for HJT on the Desktop. I suggest you create a new folder and move HJT and the logs that should be there into that folder which is also where the backups for safety will be stored.

On a second note, I notice your Java is out of date, when you have time you should open your Control Panel, locate the Java console and update that software.

You have two programs that may be doing this, first is WinPatrol. WinPatrol is so good at preventing changes that at times it has to be uninstalled before a change with HJT can be made. Let's hope we don't have to do that. Since we are going to disable your realtime protection, I suggest you be offline until you finish, then turn these programs back on before returning to online.

Turn off WinPatrol: right click the running icon , and exit. This is supposed to do it but here is some information if it helps: http://www.winpatrol.com/options.html

Turn off Microsoft AntiSpyware: Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

I see nothing else running that should effect the HJT changes, so:
Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Click on START then RUN, type "cleanmgr" without the quotes then OK. Allow the program to run and windows to remove anything it locates. Restart the computer. Make sure you are not running MSConfig in Selective Startup mode as I need to see the log in Normal Mode, this line is an indication of Selective Startup:

OK Mike great job all of that stuff is gone from your log. I notice in the last log HJT was running twice. If you just had it open twice, that is fine, if you have two copies on the computer, delete one of them.
Don't forget to update this program: C:\Program Files\Java\ If you open the Control Panel then look for the coffee cup. Once the Java console is open look for updates. Set that to autoupdates unless someone is going to do it manually.
