Many issues with a new Dell. Checking with Hijack first because it was a life saver on my last system.

Here is a fresh logfile.
I recently updated my BIOS and things seem a bit better. But this computer has sucked since the first day I powered it up.

Thank you very much for your time.

Hi dyork187:

It's the pits, to have a sucky computer. Lets see if we can coax something out of it.

You may want to copy and paste this text into a Notepad file, to place on your desktop and review as you work.

You do know that Nortons is a huge resource hog.

I could find no Malware in your Hijack This log, but that does not positively mean there is none on your PC. Lets run a couple of programs and see if anything can be shaken out.

Please install, update, then configure Ad-Aware SE to the following directions. Run it and let it remove anything it asks about.

http://www.bleepingc...showtutorial=48

Use the following link to Download: Please run this also.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist administrators and users when dealing with an infected system. Stinger utilizes next generation scan engine technology, including process scanning, digitally signed DAT files, and scan performance optimizations.

Next:
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:[list=1]
[*]When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
[*]When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
[*]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
[*]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
[*]If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
[*]When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

Download the trial version of Spy Sweeper from Here

Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient, like your desktop.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Next:
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

You have a lot of entries in startup. It might speed things up a bit if some of those 04 entries were set to manual. I only recommended one, but I'm sure others would be helpful too.

The following are recommended fixes:

Close all windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

This is a huge resource hog. If you do not have to have it in startup then get it out. Removing it here will not hurt the Program, but it will have to be started manually. Your option.
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic, along with the logs from Ewido and Spysweeper.

Please Use the Post Reply feature to post, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not change anything in the new log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Hi dyork187:

Real life does have a way of grabbing our attention. Good luck with your studies.

Your Hijack This logfile still looks clean and the tests show nothing suspicious.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice

Safe surfing. :wavey:
