Hello. After chatting with "Subratam" in the chat room I am posting this problem here. I have some type of malware on my home pc that is causing many issues. I have read up on alot of info regarding "stealthSWs114.h!dll", which is one of the files that has been referenced on many pop-up messages I am getting. These messages originaly appeared to be coming from Windows Security (XP sp2), because they appeared from the task bar and it also displayed a small shield icon there. I also have my homepage being redirected to a site (syserror.com I think) whick again warns of adware, spyware, and virus infection in a pop-up window, and is basicaly trying to sell me a fix. Also very troublesome is that this malware is blocking access to these forums. I am able to get to the homepage, and was also able to register with no problem. However, once I try to access ANY other area the site is blocked and I get a small message under the IE toolbar that says "this site is being blocked by adware on your pc" and again tells me to buy their prog to fix it. So as you can imagine I am flying blind. I am posting this from a pc in my workplace. I am trying to get a HJT log from home, and post it here from the work pc. Just wanted to make contact, and was very curious if you folks new this garbage is keeping people from viewing your (obviously very effective) forum. Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I am able to browse the web normaly. I still receive constant pop-ups from the task bar (the small red "X" and "windows logo globe" have moved to the far right of the bar) informing me that my "computer is infected" etc. The initial HJT log was in safe mode. Go to www.spyaxe.com/uninstall/uninstallers.zip
Unzip and run the uninstall.


Then look for and delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.DLL Make sure you ONLY delete svchost.DLL

Post a new HJT log. You still have some bad guys I'll help you kill. I'm at work right now so it'll be awhile.

I downloaded the SpyAxe uninstall zip file from the address you listed. I get two applications "illegal_adv_uninstaller1" and "illegal_adv_uninstaller2", but I can't get them to run? I also could not locate the "...svchost.dll". I did find "...svchosts.dll" and assumed that was what you wanted removed (gulp) so I tried to delete it. It will not permit me to, says the file is in use. I uninstalled "spyaxe" via the control panel (again) and tried to remove the svchosts.dll again, but it is still in use. Any idea why the uninstallers wont run?

Restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

OK, I was out of pocket for a day.

The "spyaxe" folder did not show up at all in the program files list. Maybe the last uninstall got rid of it? I was able to follow all other instructions. The pc is running normaly at the moment. Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL



click Start>Run and type regedit tap enter key.


Regedit will open. Make sure My Computer is highlighted. At the top of the window click edit> Find> then copy and paste the following into the window.

Interceptor.dll

Then click find now.
When you find the entry right click on it and select delete, answer ok at the prompt.
Next, press "F3" to continue searching, if another instance is found, repeat the above steps, until you see the "completed searching" message.


Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

The pc seems to be working normaly. The application "spycatcher" (something I installed early into this problem in a attempt to fix it) is giving alerts that it is "stopping spyware" when I reboot. They are

CTLTray.exe Installed with the Sound Blaster Audigy range of soundcards. Allows you to set EAX effects or equalizer settings for the Sound Blaster Audigy from a systray icon. Also allows you to launch the Taskbar via right-click -> Show Taskbar. The tasktray can be accessed via Start -> Programs -> Creative -> Sound Blaster Audigy -> Taskbar


I don't see anything wrong with either one of those. Maybe false positives.

Do you have Ad-Aware?

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.
