I'm a new user. I recently saw a process (mouse.exe) running, was sending lots of data every time i was connected to the net, stopped it from running at startup w/ Autoruns, scanned w/ Spyware doctor, found registry entry. should I fix it? also, there's another process running called "HPZipm12.exe" and it's not on my startup list (msconfig) and can't find it as a service (START-C.P.-ADMIN. TOOLS-SERVICES), but it's a running process every time i boot. (i "saved to my pc" photos someone sent me from HP Photosmart Share web site).
Please advise. My network is not working correctly (i'll post on another forum later) and am wondering if mouse may have had something to do with that. anyway, her's the log:

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

LDTate, i did all recommended in post#4:
CW Shredder removed 1 item: CWS.Qttasks
PandaActiveScan Detected 0 all the way down the list
Spybot: no immediate threats found
AdAware: 0 new critical objects, and here is my latest HJT log. On my first log, I was MOST concerned about the mouse.exe entry, which i don't see now. I did a system restore to fix a networking problem i had, which worked, and it may've killed the mouse, too. The only other thing i'm curious about is the process, HPZipm12.exe. which i've read is for HP drivers for series 6100 (and lower) printers, but i have a HP Photosmart 7760, so i don't know if i need this process running everytime i boot. I've been e-mailing HP about it, but HP is wicked confused! See what you think:

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

You can always uncheck HPZipm12.exe in Msconfig. If you find you need it, re-check it.

click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key.
look in the Startup.
Uncheck: HPZipm12.exe

After you uncheck it, you'll be using Selective startup.
When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine.

newest log.
HPZipm12.exe is actually under the services tab in msconfig, i'll disable it later. i've "end process"-ed
it before and it doesn't seem to affect anything. I think it started running after i downloaded some pictures someone sent me from HP Photosmart Share web site. the only other processes i wonder about after googling for them are wuauclt.exe (windows updater) and msmsgs.exe (messenger service, whatever that is, i know it's a resource hog). my computer seems to be happy. see what you think.

Process File: wuauclt or wuauclt.exe
Process Name: AutoUpdate for WindowsME

Description:
Wuauclt.exe is a process managing automatic updates for Windows. This process continuously checks for the latest updates by going online. This process should not be removed if you want to get informed about new updates.

Process File: msmsgs or msmsgs.exe
Process Name: MSN Messenger

Description:
msmsgs.exe is the main process relating to the MSN Messenger Internet chat tool installed by default on most Windows computers. A tray bar is also installed alongside this process for easy access to its features which include Internet chat, file sharing and audio/video conferencing. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

Good Job

Log looks good :D

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

thanks for the info about those two processes. i don't use messenger service, so i'll probably try to disable it. as far as a firewall, will it affect my LAN (two comps, 2 NIC cards, 1 crossover cable, sharing mostly mydocs files)? the free virus protection i'll look into. the NortonAV i use now has to be re-subscribed to once a year at a pretty hefty cost. i also use AdAware and Spybot frequently. what is the ref to system restore about, i'm not sure why to do that? thank you for all your help, please know that it is certainly appreciated!

Use Add/remove Programs and remove MSN Messanger.
Unless you have a Router with a built-in firewall. you need to use one.
It would be wise to set a new Clean System Restore Point. Their could be bad guys in there that we removed. Just follow the directions i posted and it'll be a clean point.

Great job
