Dear people,

While running the windows defragmentation-programm, I get the message that it is continiously interrupted by another programm. I have closed down all programms that appear in the window when you click control-alt-delete (except explorer), so I suspect something else is running. It would be great if somebody with more knowledge of this stuff could tell me if they see anything suspicious... thanks in advance!

My system is windows 98, this is the HJT-log:

Hello Bas, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Hello LDTate,

Thanks for your rapid reply! :-) I have done the above and now get the logfile below. Do you see anything suspicious, for example the trusted ip-range?

The thing that started this for me is that my computer regularly won't shut down. I then use the reset-button, which makes it start up and check itself. Usually I then get the message: "scandisk found .... bites that may be a lost file but probably are only taking space"

The other odd thing is that when I try to run the defragmentation-routine, it keeps getting interrupted by somethin writing to the disk.

Again thanks for your help!

Best wishes,

Bas

I suggest you do this:

Download this file from the link to your desktop.
http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf

Right-click on the deldomains.inf file and select 'Install'

Once it is finished your Zones should be reset.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection

Use Add/Remove Programs and remove:
ADTOOLS
ADTOOLS SERVICE

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdTools Service] C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADTOOLS SERVICE\ADTOOLS.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

1. Open My Computer
2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files (If listed)
7. Click OK and windows will comply.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Hello!

I did the above, except that adtools and adtools service didn't show up in the programm-list. I did however find a folder named Ad tools in the programms-folder on my computer and I have removed that.

The problem persists that the disk-check-routine and the defragmentation-routine can't run beceause they get interrupted by a programm writing to the disk. Does this new log-file give any clues? And is Wmiexe.exe suspect? (Sounds suspect to a laymen like me :-) ).

Best wishes,

Bas

Wmiexe.exe

NT component, used by Windows Millennium to detect Plug and Play-compliant IEEE 1394 devices during the startup process. Since this is important for the computer to work properly if you have these, Windows Millennium protects wmiexe.exe and will restore the file even if it's deleted or renamed. Check here for some details on what to do to stop it loading

Your log looks good. I use to have the same problem when I had W98. You should run Scandisk before Defrag. It's common when running Scandisk that after Scandisk restarts 10 times, it'll give you the option to not see that warning again while running it during that run. Read this article:
