Occasionally when playing games (usually World of Warcraft, but also other games), the game completely locks up. I cannot end the process or anything, the only way is to press my reset button. However, after resetting like this, my computer cannot connect to the internet after the restart. Other computers on the network can get on the internet fine. My computer is then unable to ping the modem, cannot connect to the modem GUI webpage, etc, while the other computers on my network can. This continues for usually 2 hours, when it miraculously starts working again, however if i try to use the internet before it is ready to start working again, it will not work, and then will take even longer before i can use it again. I am using 1.5k ADSL internet that is always on. No viruses etc. Any ideas? Thanks.
Well.. if your resetting it, then your adapter falls back to default settings and untill your lease time is up on your DHCP (which by your post I am guessing is around 2hours) and it renews the IP it will nto be recognized. What you need to do is use the power button instead of reset. How many icons are in your system tray (were your clock is)
I can't turn it off with the power button, i think instead of it just turning it off, the power button automatically tries to shut down, but can't because the system is locked up, so it does nothing. But, turning the computer off at the power point works, and then my internet works when i turn it back on. I have 8 icons in my system tray.
Ok, so no matter how long you press and hold the power button… it doesnt turn off..? assuming your running Windows XP, click on start, then run and type msconfig. under the "Startup" tab uncheck everyting and click to apply.. then click ok.. then reboot. You will get a popup saying "You are using the windows configuration utility…etc..etc.. click the box in the lower left hand corner that says "do not show this again" then click on ok. Everything in your system tray constantly sends and recieves information, taking up your resources.. what your doing here is keeping all that from starting with Windows.. you didnt uninstall.. or delete anything.. and if theres anything you want back there… then simply go back to msconfig and place a check by what you want to keep.
You were right about the DHCP lease. It was set on lease forever for some reason. I've changed it to 30 minutes, which is the minimum it will let me use. Ive removed everything unneeded from startup.
