thanks for any help. my main problem is that my computer seems to take longer to load and sometimes seems to take longer to do normal (cpu intensive) tasks than it once did. i know that i have multiple viruses but AVG Free Edition never gets rid of them and I grow tired of the 30+ minute time it takes to run the scanner anyways.

Doubleclick on HijackThis.
Then click on the button that says run a system scan
Then place a check next to the following items and click "fix"

We are going to install Ewido AV. I have included instructions below, but there is also a PDF created by Spydie here if that suits you better.


Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

I ran the ewido program 3 times having the same problem. It would work fine, finding several infections, and then get to around 34% while scanning the firefox profile in my documents folder and then crash with the "send / don't send" winxp screen. So I went into that folder and manually deleted the cached files. Then I ran it again, where it found most (if not all) of the same infections it had the previous 3 times, but this time at 34% something different happened, it crashed saying:

The instruction at "0x0035c871" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory coudl not be "read".

So i can't give you a report for that. Here's a HJT report:

update: So I just decided to delete the firefox profile where the crashes were occuring and did so. It got through without crashing this time, but instead got to around 66% and crashed. I then did it again and luckily it got all the way through. THe reason they're coming back is that I believe you have a rootkit on your computer. The ewido log helped me see it. Let's get rid of it.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46 from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished,
try deleting these folders:
C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy
C:\Program Files\WinFixer 2005

please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

I could not delete those two folders because they don't seem to exist. i did a ewido scan and it did not find those files. Maybe it's gone? here are the requested logs:

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
