Hi and thanks for having me,

This is the story:

Before learnig about HighJackThis, I went and bought SPY SWEEPER (WEBROOT). I think everything cleaned except I keep getting ADSTARTUP.....automove.exe in my startup list ( I check through msconfig). I uncheck it, hit cleanup, use regedit and delete it from HKLM\...run. ( Also deleted something called adupmanager.xml or something of the like that I found in C:. Anyways, everytime open IE... ADSTARTUP pops up again in msconfig startup and WEBROOT warns me and I re-remove from list......over and over again. Please help.....here is my log.

Hi ......
I know its only been about four and a half days , but I realy wish someone would take a look at my problem. It only happens when I start IE. That is when "adstartup" comes back....every time. I am anxious to start a network but want a clean computer to start with. If no one replies I guess I am suppose to add a link in the 5 day plus folder. I appreciate any help.....here is my latest log. Like I said, SS removes it and then it comes back each and every time.

Hello mpfd, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

Thanks LD,

Ran all the things you asked. Results:

No CW found
A couple of cookies on HoseCall
No viruses on eTrust
Panda kept loading error so I had to skip

Spy-bot ...a couple cookies
Ad Aware......cookies, "commonname", and "alexa" removed.

None of these remove "Adstartup" out of my startup like my own Webroot SS does.

Again, this only pops back in when I start IE. It does not happen when starting Yahoo browser or Firefox. My computer browser seem to hang up alot for a dsl connect. I have had this "adstartup" for a long time now. I don't see a ton of pop ups because of pop up blockers I guess. I just wanted to clean this pc before I networked to my new jacked up gaming pc.....I don't know much but I don't want to infect the new one. Here is my Hijack log and THANKS AGAIN!

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

I suggest you do this:

we need To disable TeaTimeruntil your PC is clean.

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

To configure Windows to show all files

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.

Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, click Show hidden files and folders.
If you see a warning message, click Yes.
Click Apply.
Click OK.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {7D1F8C96-51D7-42DE-A010-55DCB5924CF1} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\RQTRR.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adstartup] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\automove.exe

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press the F8 key until the startup menu appears.

Choose the Safe Mode option then press Enter.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\automove.exe

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks LD!!!!

I did pretty much like you instructed ( I have windows/me, therefore no docs & settings folder) and I think I lost it ....atleast Adstartup did not come back yet. It always did when I opened IE. Also, there was no automove.exe ever found on my system, although I deleted adupmanager.xml again out of my C: . Deleted that RQTRR.DLL out of that folder (it was originally named SDwin 32 according to properties inf), but left "rqtrre.xml" and "rqtrra.xml" as I was unsure about touching those. Actually, I think HJTHis deleted it for me. Anyways all is well so far. I have to say though, my old pc never seemed to run much different....with or without this.....(I think, we"ll see.)

Thanks for the great help you have been to me ...........

Here is my log.......(.about blank>>> came back though)

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Download Registrar Lite from here:
http://www.resplende...oad/reglite.exe

Put it in its own folder. You may want to keep this program. It is an excellent free, registry editor.

Copy and paste the follow text into the address bar, then hit 'Go':
HKEY_LOCAL_MAchine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant

In the pane on the right are the values associated with that key.
We want to remove this one -> about:blank

Right click on it, and select delete.
If you get a confirmation question, respond OK then close out the program.

Do the same for this one:
HKEY_LOCAL_MAchine\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch

Exit Reglite
Reboot and post a new HJT log.

Good Job

Looks good :D  How is it running any issues?

Do the following:
In Windows, on the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon.

On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, check Hide file extensions for known file types.

Then, under the "Hidden files" folder, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.

Click Apply.
Click OK.

To disable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click the System icon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the Performance tab click File System.

Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore.

Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

Now enable.

To enable Windows Me System Restore
Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Performance tab click File System.
On the Troubleshooting tab, uncheck Disable System Restore.
Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Safe Surfing. :D

LD, Thanks for helping this firefighter out......sure nice of you. No issues so far and looks good!! One question: System restore......should I enable or disable. Right now disabled because it took up most of my 40G hard drive....hehehehehe. What about all those files in C:/restore/temp folder....can I delete them? I turned off system restore also because it took forever to scan all those restore files. Thanks again

Yes, you should get rid of all temp files. Turn system restore ON. If all else would fail, you can go back to a clean restore point.

Ok LD, But I thought those C/REstore/Temp files were my last restore points? If I delete them I would be deleting restore points.....(in the future when I enable system restore)..but I'm probably wrong...... Restore folder is also a "hidden" system file that I still have not hid those folders yet. Sure I should delete those files then enable SYS RESTORE? And then do I occasionally empty that "hidden" restor/temp folder after creating "clean" point? It seemed to have taken up much of my little HD (about half) even with restore files set to the minimum scale. I thought would be deleting the restore point.

Well the easiest way to find out is delete them and then create a new restore point.
