Hi all,

First time poster :D
Having major problems with my Toshiba Satellite laptop. Something has suddenly gone hiccup with it. I am running CounterSpy, Norton Internet Security, and Norton Anti-Virus, all updated to latest specs. My problem now is that after my computer boots up, I am taken to Windows Explorer, which is open at My Documents. The Desktop has the wallpaper, but no icons, no Start Bar, and no Task Bar. Norton keeps popping up saying that there is no Anti-Virus protection active. I think this is linked to the fact that the computer actually doesn't complete the boot up process, and so Norton doesn't load. I think this because my sound card (Creative) drivers also don't load (i.e I don't get the creative spashscreen and tune). In Windows Explorer, if I go to Desktop, everything shows, and all is usable. Helpful hints are: I just completed a virus scan (none detected), and CounterSpy said something about blocking a startup program. I have since gone into CounterSpy and uncehecked everything that it said it was blocking at startup. I then rebooted, but to no avail. Here is my HJT log. Helppppppppppppppp

Hello g991375, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
– Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
– Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
– Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, bear with me here, it may help others <_<
I tried all three of the anti-virus programs that you kindly pointed me to in your post. Unfortunately, none of them worked, as when they tried to access the internet (broadband here) they ALL told me that I was not connect and that updates could not be downloaded.
Trend Micro Housecall told me that it could not update successfully, gave me an error code of 28, and and error string of 'Generic source network failure'.
eTrust installed the ActiveX controls to access my computer, then went looking for updates, and told me that the connection to the ftp server failed.
Panda installed itself nicely, but when I clicke on a scan option, I got the little yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the lower left of the screen with the caption' error on page'.
Spybot was basically the same. Program installed OK, but would not run until it had updated itself. This wouldn't happen as it kept saying that I wasn't connected. Hmmm.
Adaware was kind of the same. Installed OK, but couldn't update. Decided to run it with the 159 day old definitions, and it found what I suspected, a dodgy file in the registry. Quarantined and removed, restarted, and voila, desktop is back. Thankyou very very much. Is interesting to see that this file could get past Norton and Counterspy. I think it will be prudent in the future to run more than one Antivirus software, and more than one Spyware program. Hijackthis logfile attached

Anything else on here that causes you concern??

I think it will be prudent in the future to run more than one Antivirus software,

Running more then one AV isn't recommend. That can cause lockups and confilicts.

I don't understand the Not Connected issue when you try to update.

Lets do this one. It needs to be run in Safe Mode. Make sure you disconnect your cable from the modem.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Wow, very impressed with Ewido. First the Ewido log, then HijackThis log:

Starts quicker than ever before too :D
CDROM and USB ports suddenly came to life. Norton is still giving me some frief. This time when I restarted, it hasn't started itself properly, and is telling me that Auto-Protect is turned off. However, when I open Norton and manually turn on Auto-Protect, the selection won't stick. Hmmm. Otherwise all is good, apart from an external portable HDD that Windows won't recognise for some reason. Brand new Iomega 60GB HDD and I can't use it. Working on it though.
You might try uninstalling Norton and reinstalling it. Be sure to unplug the internet connection first.

Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
