Hi: We have a problem that has defied all my atempts at removal.
Norton A/Virus scan indicates the trojan Vundo infection but cannot remove, delete or Quarantine it.
I have downloaded and run the Symantec TrojanVundo removal tool and also their Adware VirtueMonde removal tool. Each tool when run indicates that the threat is not present!

Some of the traces of the Vundo are present.
Specifically the gebyv.dll in C:\windows\system32\gebyv.dll
and the traces of 'gebyv' in the registry file.

The system OS is XP Pro SP2 with updates set to download automatically.
We also run Norton AV 2005, Adaware 6 & SpyBot SD, both of which are updated regularly.
We use Netscape as our browser not IE.

Because the removal tols cannot detect either infection I am guessing that there was either a
failed/incomplete installation or partial removal by Norton.

Enclosed is a highjack log file and a txt of regsrch on 'gebyv'with an additional note re
a search with windows regedit for 'gebyv'. Interestingly regedit found 1 more instance than
regsrch.

Thanks in advance for looking. Graham

I am concerned about entries at 02 and020 re gebyv

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\vybeg.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll

    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/31b16535fb33fc…ip/RdxIE601.cab

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Copy a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

After the reboot, delete this file if it still exists:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\awvvu.dll

It will be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for this file.
Hi again:

OK. I ran the Vundofix as requested and will copy the logs at the end of this post.

Of note - 2) I see that the HJT log still shows # 016 from real.com ; it must have regenerated
on startup.
3) After the vundofix the BHO MSEvents was gone so was not included in the HJT fix.
but I see #02 BHO MSEvents is still in the new HJT log but with 'fill missing' added

Also, (and please this is FYI only….you have been a great help) the folks who wrote the
Vundofix have updated their program and the changes may confuse someone who was
trying following your instructions 'to the letter'.
1) the list of forums on opening is gone
2) after entering the fix/removal strings you no longer have to press F6
3) when you close HJT you return to the vundofix program and are told to
do a manual shutdown of the computer

2 questions.

1)Should we continue with atempts to remove the eal com process?

2) When all fixes are complete should I go to the 'System restore' program and
turn it of to remove all previous restore points and then turn it back on and force
a new 'clean' restore point?

Again, thanks for your help. Graham

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

M68: After doing the last cleanup the HJT shows all items checked are gone. Many thanks for your patience and especially your excellent help. Graham :)
