I've been having a lot of crashes/freezes the past 7 days. I've run Spy Bot, Ad-Aware, SpyDoctor and Registry Doctor. Continue to have problems. During Registry Scan, the computer turns off after about 90% of scan is completed. Here's my log.

Hi SkinDoc

You may want to read this first, then copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work.

For the problem you mention, the best advice I could give, is to do a thourough cleaning of your PC. That includes running some online scanners for Viruses and Trojan Horses, then updating and running Ad-Aware se and Spybot S&D, then cleaning out your temp and temporary internet files. Then run a CHKDSK and DEFRAGMENT your PC, for the reasons stated below.

Please use the following links to run two, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
http://www.kaspersky.co.uk/news.html?id=146100010
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Lets run one, or both of these too.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

And here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If you are unable to get or use either of the online Trojan Scanners above………..

Go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working.

Please download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution : It is not recommended to use the 'Issues' tab as it is known to find legitimate items.
  • After it has completed it's process, click Exit.

Then in Internet Explorer click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Next:
The following will take as long as several hours to finish, so don't start until you have the time to spend doing a CHKDSK AND DEFRAG.

In Windows XP, click Start>>My Computer. Then right-click the hard drive icon. It's usually drive C. Select Properties from the pop-up menu. Select the Tools tab. Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button. Select (click on) the two boxes. Click Start and reboot.
Chkdsk will run on restart and will clean up any errors on your Hard disk.

Then, Defragment your Hard drive. The Defragmenter needs lots of space
A near-full hard drive is the bane of the Defragmenter. Windows requires at least 15 percent of your hard drive free to complete defragmentation. According to Microsoft, less space(than 15%) will result in an incomplete defragmentation. Here's what makes me think the above will help……
If you don't have enough free space, that could cause Disk Defragmenter to stop in the same place each time, which seems to be what it is doing.
Defrag can be found by following the same instructions as locating CHKDSK.

There isn't much in your Hijack This logfile, that needs fixing.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next:
Close all Windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {243B17DE-77C7-46BF-B94B-0B5F309A0E64} - (no file)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.
Please Use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please let me know if this issue has been resolved.

Note: Do not change anything in the new log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
I had a lot of problems running the spyware. The program would be anywhere between 50-90 % complete and the computer would crash. The Windows Support Center says that it is either a RAM, CPU, Motherboard or Power Supply issue. I did look at the task manager and watched to see what the CPU was doing one time and it started out at about 6% useage and by the end was peaking in the 90-100 % range before the computer crashed.

Anyway, here's my log:

Hi SkinDoc

Your Hijack This log does seem to be clean, except for a single orphaned file, which should cause no problems. Since you have ran the series of online scanners, Ad-Aware and Spybot, I would venture to say the problem is not associated with Malware and could very well be one of the issues that Windows Support advised. However, since I am not an expert it those areas, I would recommend you post to another of our areas and give them all relevent information. Possibly someone there can provide the assistance you require.
