My Norton Internet Security program caught a potential threat and when I click on the names of them it brings up instructions on how to get rid of it. I did what it said but it's still there. The names are W32.Esbot.A and W32.Zotob.B. Every few minutes a small box comes up on the bottom right side of the screen that says: Rules Automatically created for Microsoft Generic Host Process W32. I dont like to keep my computer on anymore b/c I'm not sure what is happening every time that comes up. I know there is a lot of stuff in the Log Viewwr for Norton. Anything you can do to help me would be very much appreciated. Thanks. Katie
If you want me to help more (or at least try), please do this:

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Links to Hijack This! v 1.99.1:

Hijack This! at tools.radiosplace.com

Hijack This! at spywarewarrior.com

Run it from that folder.

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Reboot.

There are no signs of "infections" in the log.

Every few minutes a small box comes up on the bottom right side of the screen that says: Rules Automatically created for Microsoft Generic Host Process W32

That's you Internet security at work. Although I can't explain why it happens so often….

"Microsoft Generic Host Process W32" should be a legitimate process.

If you run a virus scan with your resident software, does it detect anything?
Ok, I did the system scan and "fixed" the ones you had me check. Nothing comes up when I do a virus scan. The only things that ever come up are the two I listed earlier and they are shown as being protected. They are listed under the Outbreak section of my Norton Software. I know in the logs that I have under that program it's saying things like: An instance of "C\Program files\common files\Sonic\update manager\sgtray.exe" is preparing to access the internet. Is that something I'm doing??? Every time that little box comes up something new comes in the log usually under the Connections tab. I just don't know if this is eventually going to mess up the computer.

That is this program:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StorageGuard] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r

It's a legitimate program.

I'm assuming you're referring to the viruses this thread is about.

They must be in "quarantine".

Isn't there a "Delete" button on Norton that would allow you to remove them?

Many programs installed have "update" features. Some are automatic, some you have to do manually.

You just need to keep track of what you have installed, and look closely at the name of the program accessing the Internet. If it's one of the update programs to your installed software, then it's your choice whether you want to allow it or not.

I have Norton 2004. When a program first tries to access the internet, there is a box that pops up asking what you want to do. On the "safe" programs, you can choose "Automatically configure access" (or something like that). If yours is that way, and you choose that, Norton won't ask again when the program access the net - is just allows it.

If you don't recognize the program, then you need to check it out first.

P.S. - I'm just guessing here, but happy belated birthday!!!
There isn't a delete button for those 2 viruses. It's under a caption called Outbreak Alerts and under the heading protected. I just want to make sure they don't spread. Thanks for all your help. I was just worried it was something that was rapidly spreading. Thanks again. And yes, yesterday was my birthday and thank you for the wish :) Katie
