Hi All, My home page has been hijacked, my machine is slow, and some pretty disgusting additions are made to my Favorites every time I reboot. Delete them and they reappear. I noticed the machine running a couple of programs upon startup (xvwizard32 and iscvshed) so I deleted those from the sys32. I downloaded and ran HiJackThis so I have the log if someone would like to help me get a clean bill of health. PLEASE!
Hi stoker, You have come to the right place- this forum exists to help you. :) Please post your HijackThis log, along with anything you think may help identify the beastie that's attacking you. Before you post the log, be sure you're using the latest version of HJT; that is 1.97.7. It would probably be best to update before running it, just to be sure. Before running it, make a PERMANENT folder (such as C:\HJT) and put HijackThis.exe in it. That way, it can make the backups it needs. If it's in a temporary folder, it can't do this. The sooner you post the log, the sooner one of our experts can help you. Good luck.
Hi k3dc,
Thanks for the response. My HiJackThis log is below. Like I said before, I've deleted some things already but clearly I am still having problems and it is above my computer abilities.
I used HiJackThis to "fix" some things already and it is installed in it's own folder so backups are available if needed. Thank you again!!

Hi stoker,

Thanks for the prompt post. You have a variant of the CoolWebSearch infection. Go to http://spywareinfo.com/~merjin/files/cwshredder.zip and download the CWShredder utility.

Unzip it into any convenient PERMANENT folder, and when you open it the first time, check for and install any updates. Then, CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND BROWSERS except the one CWShredder is running in, and run it. Use FIX (rather than SCAN, which will not fix any problems found), and let it FIX anything it finds. Reboot your computer.

After rebooting, run HijackThis again and post a fresh log so our experts can help you with any manual cleanup necessary to finish the process.
ok…nevermind. I think you had Merijn mis-spelled. I switched the i and the j around and got it downloaded. I will give it a whirl.
Sorry 'bout that; that's what I get for typing instead of cutting and pasting.

There's one more thing I forgot to mention; you should go to Microsoft at http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp and get the updates for both Windows and Internet Explorer. Install them all- especially the Critical Updates and Service Packs. Reboot as necessary, and keep updating until you get the message that you have installed all critical updates. They close some really glaring holes in Windows security, and will help keep you from getting reinfected as easily again. ;)
I will start by saying THANK YOU! The help available on this site is outstanding. I ran HJT and submitteed to this site and was advised to download and run CWShredder. Did that. Hi stoker,

I'm glad things seem to be going better. There are still a few things that I'm not sure about in your log, though. But, since I'm still in training I should let one of our experts handle it, to give you whatever further directions are needed. ;)

There IS one thing, though. I can see from your log that you have not updated your Windows and Internet Explorer yet. Those updates are really needed to help prevent further infections, since they close quite a few major security breaches that exist in your system as it's now set up. Please refer to the instructions in my earlier post, and help us to help you by doing this.

I would also suggest installing Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are very effective tools in preventing nasties from making their home in your system, and for removing them if they do. They are also FREEWARE. Here are links and instructions for use:

Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you do have them, make sure they are updated and configured as described.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Next, press "Download Updates." Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (usually it's best to choose the site nearest you). If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, reboot your system.

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Start the program by clicking on its desktop icon, and check for updates of the reference file by using the "Search for Updates Now" button at the lower right of the panel. When you have updated, the ref file should read at least 01R279 31.03.2004 or a higher number/later date.

Click on START and be sure the "Activate In-Depth Scan" is on ("ON=GREEN"). Press the "Select Drives and Folders" radio button, and then "Select"; a window will open that shows your drives. Be sure ALL hard drives are checked, and click on "Proceed". Now click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: (Remember, ON = GREEN).

Also select "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files." Then go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning," "Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot." Now click on "Proceed" to save your settings; AdAware is now configured for use.

To scan, simply click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say yes to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?"

Reboot again, and then post a new HijackThis log to check what's left
K3dc has cleaned you up good - just a little more to do. Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\secure.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {08351226-6472-43BD-8A40-D9221FF1C4CE} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VB_run] C:\WINDOWS\comctl_32.exe

Click here, for instructions on how to enable hidden files and folders to be visible. After enabling, reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 after the BIOS has loaded, find and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\comctl_32.exe

Reboot back into normal mode, rescan with HJT and post a new log here for a final check over.
Here is my updated log. Thanks again to k3dc and Daemon for ALL your help!

I did not find the comctl_32.exe file on the machine.
Good work, stoker. And, I see you got those updates, too. That's good- running on the Web without them is like driving through a bad part of town with your windows down. :o Keep checking for new updates, too; I'd suggest checking once or twice a month, as well as anytime you hear about new updates being released. Actually, just go to START, and "Windows Update" should be right at the top of the menu. ;)
Glad we could help :D
