HijackThis Log - problems with popups, and more...

Hi all.

1st up, thanks for doing this. I'm at my wits' end :(

Problem 1:

I constantly get pop-ups from Adult Friend Finder and other sites like that when I run IE. This does not happen with Firefox. So I've just been using Firefox, and ignoring the problem…

But I recently started playing Anarchy Online, and the pop-ups are back, usually after I activate the game client or log out of a session.

Problem 2:

For some reason, the graphics and icons on www.yahoo.com and www.sg.yahoo.com will not load. This happens for both IE and Firefox.

I can't figure this one out. I've tried clearing the cache, running Viruscans (AVG Free Ed, updated daily), installing a firewall (ZoneAlarm, Free Ed) and running Ad Aware (I rebooted before running HijackThis, as instructed).

Any help you guys can offer will be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello chycken4, welcome to the forum.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

There is 1 file I had to restore:

C:\Program Files\WinPoET Broadband Connection\WrDialer.exe -> Heuristic.Win32.Dialer : Cleaned with backup

This is my dial-in software for my ADSL - couldn't connect to net without it.

Thanks!

Looks like you have a Lop.com infection. To remove it follow the instructions below.

For Windows 2000/XP users
Click Start Select Control Panel
double click Add/Remove Programs
look for any of the following, and uninstall them:
Window Search
Window Searching
Lop.com
LOP SEARCH
Browser Enhancer
Ultimate Browser Enhancer
IMPORTANT!!!

You may find entries similair to the above but with Weird spacing in the names.
They are Lop.com, uninstall them.

If it is not listed in Add/Remove Programs, or if the uninstall does not
seem to work go here:
http://lop.com/new_uninstall.exe
download and run this uninstaller. Reboot when done.

Before restart, Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Hi LDTate.

None of the Lop.com programs exist in my add/remove programs.

I downloaded the uninstaller from the link you posted, but AVG caught a virus in the program: Trojan Horse Downloader. Swizzor.4.C.

So I did not run the uninstaller.

I went to Lop.com and read their faq, and I found a program in my add/remove programs that is listed: "Search Pluggin". This has been removed.

downloaded the uninstaller from the link you posted, but AVG caught a virus in the program: Trojan Horse Downloader. Swizzor.4.C

.

WOW, I haven't seen that happen before. LOP is gone though.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Funny thing happened:

I "Reset Web Settings" as instructed under Control Panel>Internet Options>Programs tab, and I checked "Also Reset my Homepage" before clicking "OK"

But IE and Firefox both went to http://sg.yahoo.com/ as homepage.

The graphics on http://sg.yahoo.com/ (Singapore site) still do not load,

But!

The graphics on http://www.yahoo.com/ (main site) load fine, except for the main Yahoo logo top centre, the small logo bottom right near the copyright notice, and the square logo under "Marketplace" in the right column.

In any case, this is merely annoying, and not too much of a problem. Besides this, do you see any problems from the logfile?

If you don't think there's anything seriously wrong with my system at this point, I'm quite happy to leave it be. There are probably other people with more serious issues that you need to help.

Thanks again for your time! :D

- Brendon

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Sweet! Thanks! Will download Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. I already use Spybot, AdAware and AvgFree. My firewall is ZoneAlarm - should I change to the SyGate one you reccommended? Thanks again! - Brendon

My firewall is ZoneAlarm - should I change to the SyGate one you reccommended?

If you're happy with ZoneAlarm, keep it
