Please help, my hijack this log

I have done a lot to get rid of viruses but I still have the occasional pop up and for some reason I cannot access any pages on the Microsoft website. If anyone can please look this over for me, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you. I am currently having trouble logging on to the msft website and have trouble viewing many videos with Quicktime as well as WMP. I also still have a random pop up that appears every once in a while - the page is always a 404 error page however.

Step 1
Download and run Stinger
  • Download Stinger and save it to your desktop.
  • Reboot into safe mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  • Double-click on Stinger.exe to open the tool.
  • Choose your entire hard drive to scan.
  • Choose Scan Now.
  • Stinger will fix anything that it finds.
Step 2
Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

With all other programs and browsers closed, click fix checked.


Step 3
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 4
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\syswin32.exe << File Only

C:\Program Files\Raoce << Whole Folder
C:\Documents and Settings\Chase Bravo << Whole Folder


You'll need to search for these files with Explorer to delete. They may be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ or C:\WINDOWS\

Reboot normally and run at least two of the following online virus scans making sure to reboot in between each one. Allow them to fix anything they find.You need to use Internet Explorer or Netscape browsers.

Write down anything that can not be fixed. Include the file name and the path to the file.


Step 6
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include anything that can not be fixed by the online scans.

Ok so I did everything requested. I did not delete C:\Documents and Settings\Chase Bravo << Whole Folder as requested since it is a hugely important file for me, all the music, pics, and school work that I need.

Everything is running pretty well now. I still get some popups when I use IE, but my default is Firefox so that isnt a big issue. I can watch videos again, and I can access the Microsoft website. Thanks!

There were some spyware elements remaing after everything but I forgot to write them down, hope that isnt too big a mistake.

Open HijackThis, run a scan, then check the following:

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.


Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

Step 4
To use RootKit Revealer please make sure you are logged in as an Administrator to the computer.
  • Please download and unzip Rootkit Revealer to your desktop.
  • Please leave the defaults set as they are to:
    • Hide NTFS Metadata Files: this option is on by default
    • Scan Registry: this option is on by default.
  • Launch rootkit revealer on the system and press the Scan button.
    RootkitRevealer scans the system reporting its actions in a status area at the bottom of its window and noting discrepancies in the output list. It may take a long time please disconnect from the internet and leave the PC to be scanned until it is finished.
  • The log can be very large please edit out the items in the following folders in the log : C:\RECYCLER\NPROTECT and C:\System Volume Information, if in the log, before posting it.
  • Please post the balance of the log here in this thread using Add Reply (please double check that it has all been posted as it may be too long for one post)

Step 5
Scan with HijackThis and post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the results of RootkitRevealer

I have done everything.
After the Rootkit Revealer it said there were no discrepencies found.
Also, the file C:\Documents and Settings\Chase Bravo\socks.exe << File Only was not present.

Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.



MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.

If you are on a slow connection or dial-up, you may want to Order the Windows XP SP2 CD from Microsoft. This is provided free of charge from Microsoft.



I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.
