Hello, and first off, thanks for any help that anyone cares to give me. It's greatly appreciated.
The main problem that I've been having (starting this morning) is that every 2 minutes or so I get an error popup from MSIE saying it needs to close and report an error back to MS.

I don't use MSIE, and MSIE isn't open.

I'm pretty sure there's some form of malware resident. This steals the focus from the open window and it's trying to change my old personal homepage, a local HTML file I made to link to my personal favorites. At least that's what I think it's trying to do, as I said, I don't use MSIE, I use Firefox. Whatever this malware is, it also at first wouldn't let me dl Hijack This. I was able to get it from the direct link from Merijn. HJT log follows.

Hello Steve and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Please download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Double-click LQfix.exe and click install.
Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
Follow the prompts on the screen. Your system will reboot afterwards.
Your system may take longer than usual to start up this one time; please be patient.

After the computer reboots, post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this topic.
Hello Alan, and thank you for responding. LQFix dl'ed and run. HJT log follows.

C:\WINNT\system32\msw32.pif
C:\WINNT\system32\mswind32.pif

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
OK, Alan. I've followed the instructions and here are the results.

Step 1)
DL'ed and ran Stinger. It didn't seem to find anything, at least it didn't make any onscreen notification.
After running, with settings unchanged in safe mode it said:

Scan initiated on Sat Oct 15 20:37:53 2005

Number of clean files: 128307

…and that's it. It seemed to be ok so I went onto…

Step 2)
Opened and ran HJT. These lines were >not< in the scan:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Win Security] msw32.pif
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Win Security] msw32.pif
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win Security] msw32.pif
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Win Security] msw32.pif

All others were in the list, they were checked and fixed.

Step 3)

I set my system to show all files. No big deal, nothing unusual happened.

Step 4)

I deleted C:\WINNT\system32\mswind32.pif, but C:\WINNT\system32\msw32.pif
wasn't there to be deleted. Again, concerned, but not sure what to do just yet.

Step 5)

Here are the results:

As far as performance issues go, I haven't done a run of any major applications I have outside of Firefox. There have been no further popups. Before the popups happened, however, my ATI Multimedia Center wasnt playing DVDs or recording video. I'll see if I'm still having those issues, but that's for another forum.

Now, should I go hunting again for the msw32.pif? Will any other user accounts I have on my system still be infected? Will any file backups I have made recently be infected or a source of infection? Let me have any other suggestions you may have.

Oh, and BTW, what WAS I infected with? Just for curiosity's sake.

Steve
It looks like Stinger did remove the other items during the scan. I've not run this program on my own computer since their latest version so they may not notify if anything was fixed.

This will have removed this particular infection from all of the accounts but you can post a HijackThis log from each of the other accounts so I can see if they are infected with anything else. Be sure to title each log so I can tell them apart when giving you any possible fixes.

I noticed in your log that the logonnfy.dll file was missing so your ATI video card software may have become corrupted. I would suggest uninstalling all of them and reinstall again from disk or from the ATI Website.

Once we are sure that everything is working again, I'll give you some recommendations to better secure the computer.

Edit to add - the Hijackthis log for this account is clean now. :)
Alright, there's only one other account. Here's the log.

As for ATI Multimedia, I'll do a total reinstall and reply afterwards.

Open Hijackthis, run a scan and check the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/RobArts%20Media/My%20Documents/nethome.htm

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Win Security] msw32.pif
O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Win Security] msw32.pif

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix checked.

Reboot the computer and, after reinstalling ATI Multimedia, post a fresh HijackThis log as a reply to this thread.
OK, I'm back.

Ran HJT and checked noted files except the nethome.htm file. That's an HTML file I wrote as my personal homepage with my most visited links when I used to use MSIE. I still use the file.

I un and reinstalled ATI Multimedia Center, and except for the DVD player, all other components work. I reinstalled it a couple of times, but the DVD still fails.

Other than that, there have been no further noticeable anomalies. Here's the recent HJT log.

Download this file from ATI for the DVD player set-up. After download, run the file and it will ask for a valid ATI Install CD. Once it has determined that there is an older version of the DVD player software on the CD, it will then download the newer software for you to use.

Oh, and BTW, what WAS I infected with? Just for curiosity's sake.

 Missed this question in your previous post. The files Stinger removed and the others we fixed were signs of the W32/RBOT-AQT Worm.

New log appears clean. :)

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read the following posts to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
OK, I already have, tried, redownloaded, uninstalled and tried again with ATI CDWiz and although it may install a DVD Player client onto the machine, it immediately locks and crashes out when I try any DVD (and these are legit DVD's, not dupes, and aged from old and out for a while to brand new release), needing to be closed with Task Manager. This, however, may be a case for another forum, I wouldn't want to break any rules here. At least that's great news about the worm infection. I do have a few of the programs in the list (I swear by Firefox), and will make sure that I have everything updated. I went to the link for the W32/RBOT-AQT worm and it notes that it does do some form of keylogging and connecting to other sites with the info. Should I sweep all of my PW's on the boards and game accounts I'm on? How about Paypal or online bill payments? In any case, thank you SO much for the help! It's really cool of you to help your fellow users out here, while there are creeps who get their jollies off on writing malicious code. Again, Thank you! :D —– Steve
Your welcome. Glad to be able to help you out.

Yes, it is a very good idea to change all of your passwords on the computer and let any companies that you do online banking with know that your computer was compromised.

As for the DVD Player problem, you will need to post in the Other Computer Problems Forum. I had a similar issue to this one last year when I still had an ATI card (fried it in January) but I don't remember the full procedure I went through to fix it now. :(
