Hello

Please help.

My computer is under attack from a virus which changes the home page and keeps adding popups about privacy controls and spyware. Three new icons have been added to my desktop, Privacy Protector, Error Checker and Spyware remover. Along with the 'The Bonrep' toolbar. I have run Skybot search and destroy which removes the popups but when I log off they all come back again. Please help. I include the hijack this log below.

Hello timke and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be available to you at certain points of the removal process (while in Safe Mode). Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

1. Download and update AVG AntiSpyware 7.5.

First download AVG AntiSpyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG AntiSpyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete, run AVG AntiSpyware and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG AntiSpyware, Do Not run a scan just yet

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
3. Once in Safe Mode, double-click Smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter to delete the infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

4. Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed as follows:
  • Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, tick the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.

3. Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)

4. Save the above as CFScript.txt

5. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

6. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

    6. When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
Thanks this is looking great. You help is much appreciated.

A. First, we must DISABLE the following programs(s) so that there is no interference with our fix. Please remember to re-enable these programs when we have finished our work:

AVG ANTI-SPYWARE
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • From the "Status" menu, select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
  • Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".

B. Please RUN HijackThis
  • Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: IEHelperObj Class - {6754A456-BAD9-11D4-93D3-00B0D03A2F91} - C:\PROGRA~1\Odigo\Bin\OdigoBHO.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in this thread so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

C. Finally, please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
  • Once the files are downloaded click on Next
  • Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
[external image: Posted Image]
[external image: Posted Image]
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply, along with the new HijackThis log
Hi there

Thanks again for your help. The pc is running much quicker and there are no signs of any malware on the desktop, or menus. I follwoeed your instructions and then I've run a scan with AVG and then run kaspersky. Kaspersky still thinks there's infection. Here's the logs.
