*warning, you still appear to have an rbot on your computer*
*The below Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!*
1) Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel

2) Double click on Add/Remove Programs

3) Find "Web Search Toolbar", "Virtual Bouncer" and "Win-Tools Easy Installer (By Web Search)" in the list of installed programs and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.

During the uninstall process, you will be presented with several prompts to guide you through uninstalling the product. Read these carefully to make sure you are actually choosing to uninstall rather than keep the software.

Please go to:
start–>run

and type this in:
regedit

Then click on the FILE menu and select export
Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Then, go to start–>run

and type this in:
notepad

Paste this into the box:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
"{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=

Then click on the FILE menu and select save as
Save the file as regfix.reg. Save the file to the desktop.
IMPORTANT: make sure to save the file as "all types" and NOT as a text file

*The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!*
Now double click on regfix.reg and insert it into the registry.

We need to do a search. Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste this entire line into the Search for files and folders named box:

"yea.reg","staff.html","Gamma.html","hidden32.exe","x.bat","C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Desktop\s3rkv.exe","C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Desktop\servm3.exe","C:\Program Files\InetGet","C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\msw","C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SetupOptionWebOnline","C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Application Data\Camp kind","C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Application Data\jugsrefcomp","C:\WINDOWS\woinstall.exe"

If any of these files are found please delete them.

Finally, open up internet explorer. Go to tools->internet options->security tab
click on the internet icon. Then hit default level. Then,
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next, click on the local intranet icon. Hit default level. DO the same for trusted sites and restricted sites.
Hit ok. Close internet explorer.
Open notepad and copy and paste the contents of the following code box in it:
dir %Windir%\tasks /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save this as findjobs.bat, choose to save it as all files and place it on your desktop.

Double-click on "findjobs.bat". Post the content of the txt file you get in your next reply.

Reboot, give me a new Kaparsky log, a findjobs.bat log, and a new HijackTHis log.

Completed steps. Ran Spybot S&D, AdAware SE, CWShredder and CCleaner.

Spybot came up with "Elitum.EliteBar" and "AdDestroyer" - don't know if this was noticiable from log provided a few hours ago.

Also noticed the folder "C:\!Submit\" has the following files in it that look suspicious: "lockx.exe", "msdjgk.dll", "NAIL.EXE-00088443.PF" Do I do anything with these?

c:\!submit is the backup folder that killbox makes when you delete files. I was planning on keeping it around a bit longer in case we neeeded it.

please download to desktop but don't run yet:

WinsockXPFix
and this program:
Elitebarremoval

Copy the text inside the 'Code' box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as Fix.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files')

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\LQ]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ohbbackup]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elitum]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"antiware"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\UserAgent\Post Platform]
"iebar"=-

Reboot into safe mode by tapping F8 at boot, then use the up/down arrows to select safe mode

Manually find and delete :

- the ENTIRE contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Local Settings\Temp folder

- any/all of these, if found:
C:\Windows\EliteToolBar
C:\Windows\EliteSideBar
C:\Windows\EliteBar
C:\Windows\System32\Error.dat
C:\Windows\System32\eliteerror32.dat

NOTE: To avoid the risk of any of the above not being found due to them having the 'Hidden' attribute, show all files as follows:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Now go to Start > Run, and type Cmd then press Enter > The Command window opens.
If no commandprompt window opens, go to
Start
AllPrograms
Accessories
CommandPrompt

Copy the following line:

DEL /F /Q "%windir%\system32\elite***32.exe"

RIGHTclick your mouse in the Command Window. The line you've copied will get pasted into the command window. Subsequently press the ENTER button.

Next, still in Safe Mode, doubleclick Fix.reg you saved earlier, and answer yes when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.

Now run WinsockXPFix
Then run the Elitebar tool

When you're done, start your computer normally, and post a fresh hijackthis log.

- the ENTIRE contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\"Your User Name"\Local Settings\Temp folder

Above done. Noticed the following while looking through these directories & folders. Do I delete these also?

* Under directory "C:\Documents and Settings\Local Service\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\8LAR8L2J\" are the following files: "desktop.ini", "proxy-inst[1].exe" along with a number of htlm files

* Also noticed the directory "C:\Documents & Settings\Mom & Dad\Local Settings\Application Data\Wildtangent\Cdacache\" which has a bunch of checkers & backgammon game files in it. I've never loaded this and I know Spybot generally will identify "WildTanget" items which I always remove. However, Spybot has not caught this one in the last couple runs.

C:\Windows\EliteToolBar
C:\Windows\EliteSideBar
C:\Windows\EliteBar
C:\Windows\System32\Error.dat
C:\Windows\System32\eliteerror32.dat

None of these were found even with no hidden files & folders setting.

Ran CMD process and received the following return message: "Could not find C:\Windows\System32\elite***32.exe"

After doing eveything in your posting and while still in the safemode I re-ran CCleaner, Adaware (nothing found) and Spybot SD. Spybot SD found the following: "Alexa Related" and "Elitum.EliteBar". Using that tool I fixed these and rebooted in normal mode to provide the following HJT log.

I think this is what you want. If not, let me know what I need to do in Spybot (this was the only logs I could find).

You will also see a listing for Huntbar. Huntbar is always detected and never goes away even when I reboot and have the system try to eliminate it. I don't know why, but this has been the case for some time. If you have any ideas to eliminate this also it would be great, but one of your peers from about a year ago didn't know how to get rid of it. Since the other fixes cleaned up problem back then, he/she told me to just let it go.

I also re-ran Spybot just now and now it shows "Advertising.com", "Elitum.EliteBar" and of course "Huntbar".

I'm including the log from this morning (around 10am) and the one just ran (around 3pm).

Please go to:
start–>run

and type this in:
regedit

Then click on the FILE menu and select export
Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Then, Please go to start->run->regedit.exe

A registry window will pop up.

Click on the little (+) next to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

The pane on the left hand side will expand
Find the folder named TBPS.PluginConfig

right click that folder (on the left hand pane), and select permissions
A new window will pop up
Under the Users and groups box, highlight the group called 'everyone'

Then look at the box below. Check the tick box to allow full control.
Then hit ok.

Do the same for these two folders:
TBPS.PluginEvents
TBPS.ToolbarScript

Close the registry, and then run spybot again.
Post that part of the logfile again.

wng
Something is different. Usually, once I would run the Spybot fixes, this stuff would go away. Now it keeps coming back. The log ran after the regedit steps you had me do follows.

At the end of this posting is a Spybot run I did this morning (before your regedit fixes) and had to clean. You will see some other tracking items that are also getting through.

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
Was away form this machine for a few days. Ran requested scan. Log attached.

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding…" you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

WinPFind v1.4.1 - Log file written to "WinPFind.Txt" in the WinPFind folder.
Scan completed on 12/17/2005 7:00:15 PM
We need to do a search. Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste this into the Search for files and folders named box:

"C:\WINDOWS\system\hdhcdtr.exe"

If any of these files are found please right click them, and select properties. Record the date created, date modified, vendor, revision #, and all other pertinant info.

Then,
Please go here

and at the very top you will see "file to upload and scan"
Next to that you will see a box and a browse button.
Paste this location into the box:
C:\WINDOWS\system\hdhcdtr.exe
and then click the "submit" button
Wait a little bit and the results will appear.
Paste the results of the file here.
Step 1
Did Search: Nothing found

Step 2
Submitted (even with SpyBlaster protection diabled): Return reply follows

"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"
hmm… Try this:

Download killbox here:

KillBox

Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Start Killbox.exe

When it is open, enter C:\WINDOWS\system\hdhcdtr.exe into the field labeled "Full path of file to delete".

Select the Delete on reboot option.

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.

You will get a prompt that asks you this:

All files will be deleted on reboot

Click yes to that

You will then get this prompt:

files will be removed on reboot. Do you want to reboot now?

CLICK yes

Your computer will reboot and check to see if the file is gone.

Then, please go here

and at the very top you will see "file to upload and scan"
Next to that you will see a box and a browse button.
Paste this location into the box:
c:\!submit\hdhcdtr.exe
and then click the "submit" button
Wait a little bit and the results will appear.
Paste the results of the file here.
