System has been well for some time now, but lately is showing signs of getting sick. Popups, slow processing, tool bars added to IE.

I periodically run AdAware, Sbybot, Solo Antivirus, Ewido Security scans and have both SpywareGuard and SpywareBlaster running. Something must have gotten around all this.

Appreciate someone looking at the attached HJT log. Thanks

Did some house cleaning of my own and seem to have gotten rid of some to the problems. Don't know if I've gotten everything.

The Ewido scan had two items I passed on:

File C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP153\A0066139.EXE/IC.exe cannot be reomoved because it is embeded in the archive C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP153\A0066139.EXE

and

C:\Prograqm Files\Common Files\System32.dll/gui.exe cannot be removed because it is embeded in archive C:\Prograqm Files\Common Files\System32.dll

Just checking in. Last post was October 8th. Running Ewido scans every week and it keeps finding the same 35+ items. Same stuff seems to keep coming back.
Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped, and unfortunately, not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like. If you still need help with your problem, please reply to this message with a new HijackThis log. I will be notified automatically when you reply. wng
Thanks for picking this up wng.

I've have SpywareBlaster running and I run AdAware SE, Spybot S&D and Ewdio scans at least once a week. The Ewido scans detect the same things each week (ref the log I'm attaching and my Oct. 8th posting). Noticed the Ewido scan log shows "Error during cleaning" (see below). Don't know what this means.

Appreicate any observations you might have from the attached logs.

hmm… looks like you HAD a rootkit on your computer
Please see this for more info:
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/bo…essage.id=44280
A line was present on your first HJT log, but it's not there anymore. The rootkit might still be there, however.
I believe we can clean this off (at least I hope so) but as with almost any rootkit, I cannot be completely sure that your computer is clean.

please download Rootkit Revealer Unzip the file. Turn off your real time antivirus for a moment. Then go to file->scan
This will take some time. When it's done, go to file->save
save the logfile to the desktop, and then past the contents here.

Thanks for getting back. Reading the link you provided, it sounds like I could be terminally ill. Hope not. Results of Scan follow. C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for RootkitRevealer.zip 11/18/2005 8:09 PM 0 bytes Visible in Windows API, but not in MFT or directory index. C:\Documents and Settings\Mom & Dad\Local Settings\Temp\~DFD265.tmp 11/18/2005 8:09 PM 32.00 KB Visible in Windows API, but not in MFT or directory index. I apparently did have a rootkit, but in doing my own house cleaning by referencing related topics I killed the following by using KillBox. C:\WINDOWS\System32\lockx.exe C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka75.exe C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka75.exe That's why it was there originally and gone after. Don't know if this make the problem worse, but to the extent its relevant I thought I would mention it.
Let's try and see if we can get rid of that rbot.
Please print these instructions by clicking here. Then close all programs (especially your internet browser!!)

Doubleclick on HijackThis.
Then click on the button that says run a system scan
Then place a check next to the following items and click "fix"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows System] dkowqpkd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration] windir32.exe

Then,
We need to do a search. Start –> Search –>For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste this into the Search for files and folders named box:

"dkowqpkd.exe","C:\WINDOWS\System32\windir32.exe"

If any of these files are found please delete them.

Please go to:
start–>run

and type this in:
regedit

Then click on the FILE menu and select export
Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Then, go to start–>run

and type this in:
notepad

Paste this into the box:
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Ole]
"EnableDCOM"="Y"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000

Then click on the FILE menu and select save as
Save the file as regfix.reg. Save the file to the desktop.
IMPORTANT: make sure to save the file as "all types" and NOT as a text file

Now double click on regfix.reg and insert it into the registry.

Try running this scan:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Gimme a new HJT log and a Kaparsky log.

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Also, I believe you still have the rootkit on your computer. I am going to put this in bold because it is important. Your computer is and always will be at risk because of this rootkit. I cannot guarnatee that everything will get cleaned out. Rootkits are extremely hard to detect, and just as hard to clean out. You have to think that from this point forward, you can't trust your computer. It has been fitted with a rootkit+ a remote access trojan. That is all it takes for someone to secretly steal your financial info, or do ANYTHING they want to do with the computer. To tell the truth, the only SURE way to beat the bug is to reformat. If that is acceptable to you, not only would it be safer for you, but it would probably be less time consuming to reformat than to fight the rootkit. Let me know.

My colleague, Illukka, has given me some ideas on how to fight it.

please print this to see it in safe mode too
download registry search tool from here:
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
unzip the file to a folder on your desktop

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

1. Restart your computer
2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

then
double click on regrch.vbs, into the field "enter string to search" type or copy paste msdirectx
and hit ok
save the result and after rebooting back to normal mode post it here
*edit* I am going to be out of town for thanksgiving.Another helper will continue to assist you. I will be back on Monday. Good luck!*
Ok - did everything from the last two posts. The requested logs are attached:

HJT log
Karpersky Scan
"msdirectx" Scan
AIMFix log

I've never reformated a system before, what would be needed to do this?

Thanks

Hello Rio.

I'm a colleague of Wng's here at TomCoyote, and he asked for us to watch over this case during the holiday weekend.

Someone else may analyze the logs you sent, or Wng can pick them up when he returns.

In the meantime, you asked

I've never reformated a system before, what would be needed to do this?

This is a 'non trivial' decision and process, so I'll provide some information for you to read and 'digest' so you may make the most informed decisons.

If you do decide to go ahead, wait for Wng to get back…he should be able to provide excellent guidance on the process details. In fact, he just finished authoring our tutorial on doing this for Windows XP.

Read these very informative articles from the BroadBand Reports security site:

When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?

And…this link which contains a number of non-computerized actions you may wish to consider:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Also, start making a list of the install disks you'll need for operating system and applications programs, and think through what critical data on your system will need to be saved. We'll identify some additonal software for you to download before starting, as well as a good overview of the steps involved in the process.

Please let us know if you have questions about any of this.

Thanks

Prerequistes:
1. Your windows XP cd.
2. A means of backing up your most important data. Don't backup everything, the more you backup, the more chance there is that malware will get on your newly formatted computer. You might use another hard drive, some cd roms, or anything that holds data to backup your files.
3. There is a small chance you will need a floppy drive.
I've read the information provided. Thanks. Don't really use this computer for anything sensitive, so if there is a chance to put a fix in I'd like to try that.
