I can't get PsGuard to stop loading the C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp****.tmp file!!
(it keeps reinstalling every time I delete it in safe mode w/ HijackThis)

My log never shows any R1, R2, etc…

My beta microsoft anti spyware show's to delete those nasty registry files but they still remain and am not sure what else besides those that are causing this to still stay around. ugh!

Here's several examples of psguard in the registry (it won't let me delete them- from regedit, and these won't show up in my HijackThis file!!)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD\PSGuard
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD\PSGuard\PSGuard
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ShudderLTD\PSGuard\PSGuard\License

and I am not sure this one is still around but this is what the microsoft spyware pulled up as suspect, but I find no file of it being deleted…
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ShudderLTD\PSGuard C:\Program Files\PSGuard

I've run many of the programs you say in your other threads in safe mode

Cccleaner, Run Cleaner, Panda, ewido, adware se, spybot search and destroy, cw shredder, killbox.exe, AVG free and also previous I ran smitfraud.reg

I haven't done smitRem.exe, but all of these things have killed this little devil the last time I was infected…

I have checked and cannot find any of these files still on my computer (files showing all hidden)
ie: the C:\Windows\System32 folder

Popuper.exe
intmon.exe
shinlog.exe
intmonp.exe
ole32vbs.exe
among others…just the hp****.tmp keeps coming back ..
and when I go to panda to do a scan it sometimes triggers the virus up…ugh!

the O2 - BHO keeps reapearing (no name) - {893fad3a-931e-4e53-b515-b1426d63799b} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpAF99.tmp (file missing)

sorry for all the info, but just trying to give you the history, maybe you can find something I have overlooked from my logfile! THANKS in advance!!

-PS..I only have mcafee by itself loaded normally as my antivirus!!

here's the logfile:

Hello thunder1 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Install and Update Ewido:
  • Download and install Ewido security suite.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
    • The program will prompt you to update, click the OK button.
    • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the updates are installed, close the program.
If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {893fad3a-931e-4e53-b515-b1426d63799b} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hpAF99.tmp (file missing)

With all other programs and browsers closed, click Fix Checked.

Delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvctrl.exe

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, click "Scan your PC". After the ActiveX controls load, click "My Computer" to do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.
thnx

didn't hear back from anyone, so after a couple of days…followed advice from other threads and believe I got rid of the %#*&
no traces of anything…that smitrem download is a life saver!! THANKS!

used it before and it deleted the registry correctly.

also didn't find the C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvctrl.exe file

also could you give me a resource on what to have on my pc to prevent something like this from downloading by itself? (I think I got it by getting spoofed at a webpage where it said it needed a codec for a clip I was downloading)
I have been told since I have a router that I don't need a firewall software? is this correct…
I run mcafee as you can see and regularly scan with spybot and adaware and my browser security setting have been customized per another website, I was leary of using windows IE, so I have been using mozilla firefox…but this episode still happened… any advice?

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR FORUM AND TIME!!! :wavey:

CLEAN! :)

For panda activescan 5.51.00 I got the reply "No viruses or other malicious software have been found!"
therefore no report created and none to save….
Your new log appears clean. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "So how did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
thanks again.. will check out your info…thnx for the reminder about sys restore….will turn it back ON! didn't have a good experience earlier this year when I installed sp2 had to re-load my os but I'll get brave again and try it again later, now most of the bugs are out I think…. one more question to clarify…. do you recommend a firewall if I currently use a router? thanks Appreciate all ur help -dan
