Hi!
First post so bear with me. Blasted kids computer! HP-XP, Freedom installed. Deleted spyware using Adaware and Spyware Dr then ran Trend housecall and Bazooka and removed all garbage found. Problem is junk keeps "re-installing after removal, often including new DLL files with randomly generated "first" names. Even in safe mode-files still re-appear post deletion (ie. nail.exe in System32) after running Adaware.
Here's junk that comes up and "seems" to restore after reboot (system restore is OFF).
Transponder.Bolger, "ClickSpring items common components, Maxifiles, VX2.look2me.

Hello rmoore4127 and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

Move HijackThis to Permanent Folder:
HijackThis needs to be unzipped into a permanent folder in order to save backups just in case something goes wrong.
  • Go to Start > My Computer > and double click on C:.
  • Now right click an open area and click New > folder and change the folder name to HJT.
  • Extract HijackThis from the zipped file into this new folder.

Turn System Restore ON. In case something goes wrong during the fix, it is better to have a dirty restore point to turn to than nothing at all.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, clear the check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box, click 'OK'.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the pc has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't dissappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

Hi!
Tried a few other tools prior to receiving your instructions. Loaded BHO demon and am monitoring the randomly named BHO's this pest restores after each start-up. Still seems to be dong so, as you will see in the logfiles.

Logged on machine after normal start-up as Melss (other option is guest). Note that in safe mode I can log on as Administrator or Melss.

Checked on system restore. Although I was fairly sure I disabled it, as previously mentioned, system restore was ON.

Ran l2mfix as per instructions. Note that prior to reboot, the message "Registry editing disabled by administrator" pops up. I hit OK and program continues with reboot.

After reboot I log in as Melss. Machine begins scan but again, throughout process, "registry editing disabled by administrator" continues to pop-up.

By the way, as I'm working on this, one of the recently generated files (agyicii…..each time/this session) keeps trying to access the internet. I keep blocking permission through Freedom.

System completes scan, generated log file and I reboot and generate a new Hijackthis file. Logs follow:
Thanks,
Bob

You are still running HijackThis from withing the zip folder.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Open Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log and the log from the Ewido scan.
Sorry so long in getting back. I followed your suggestions and after repeated trials still found that malware kept restoring itself. Essentially gave up and restored XP on the system from scratch after backing up docs/pics/neccessities on external drive (which I will exhaustively check for malware/trojans/etc before returning to system). Immediately post restoration I updated Windows and installed Freedom Firewall/AV. Finally installed Adaware with all patches. System reports back clean. Appreciated your assistance. Closing post. Thanks
I will leave you with my All-Clean speech to help better protect your computer. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

AVG AntiVirus - Free antivirus program if you currently are not using one.
ZoneAlarm - Free firewall program if you currently are not using one.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read "So how did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
