This computer started beeping all by itself, sometimes when it is not being used; windows explorer doesn't always open properly - the folder panel is empty or missing; mouse right-click stops working; eventually programs will not open at all, the hourglass appears for several seconds and then goes away; eventually the 'start' menu shortens and no longer includes the 'shutdown' item.

I have run SpyBot S&D and 65 things were found and removed - but the symptoms remain.

Hello wesmat, Sorry for the wait we are extremely busy :( If you are not being helped elsewhere and still need help then do this:

Thanks miekiemoes for this fix :)

1) Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

2) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

4) Enable hidden files: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\WINDOWS\etb\ >>> folder (should be gone but don't miss it)

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:

5) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp
Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Hey wesmat How do I get feedback out of you?? Did you look at all of that junk Ewido cleaned out for you? Lots of trojans and spyware. Look where those cookies were so you can start cleaning that area when you do your routine maintenance, maybe CCleaner will get those, but I ran Ewido first so you could see the scan. The realtime protection in Ewido will go away after the two weeks (uses a little resource also) but you get to update and keep the scanner for as long as you like. I see a lot of junk in your System Restore files, so we need to turn it off, restart the computer, then turn in back on. This will give you clean files, here are instructions:

Sorry about the lack of feedback. I've got a cold or something and don't feel so good. Thanks for your help. Everyone on these forums are always so helpful, I think this is the fourth computer I have had brought to me with problems, this one is from another friend who came to me when their computer was doing 'strange things'. I'm a retired programmer after 25 years and get many requests for help. Sometimes its a hardware issue - which are the easy ones. It is so annoying to me that the whole spyware/virus situation exists. I will never understand the mind that writes code like this and it REALLY upsets me that OS's, email, etc. make it possible for them to propagate. The unaware user is at an extreme disadvantage. Hello Wes, Sorry to hear you are not feeling well :( but glad to hear your computer is feeling better. I'll take a few moments to give you some feedback. First, I want you to know there are several free online opportunities to learn more about removing malware including "Classroom" right here at TomCoyote. TC is a little selective about who they allow in but with your background it would probably be no problem. You can learn at your own speed, if you are ever interested, just let a mod or teacher know.

As far as the writers of this junk, least we forget, it is all about the money$$$. "As you said The unaware user is at an extreme disadvantage." I agree that they know little about the writers of the junk, but they also know little about who pays for it to be placed on their computers. I track down some of the payers from time to time and email with my disgust and promises to inform as many folks as I can about who they are and who they are paying, and you would not believe some of the denial emails I get back. Pick up a rock and watch the roaches scurry. We need to find a way to shine the light on the co-partners of the hackers and take away their $$$$. Any ideas?

The only idea I have is: the best way to fight big $$$ is with bigger $$$. For instance - if MicroSoft really wanted to end the problem they could. But as you say, it's all about money and until stopping spyware, etc. means a profit for MS they won't be putting a lot of money into it. _shrug_ Finding deep pockets someplace is probably the only way to really put an end to all this. -Wes
