I'd appreciate help interpreting the HJT log pasted below. This machine has been running sluggishly recently – any help figuring out why will be much appreciated. Thanks!

OK, thanks for the new log. I see some stuff that needs to go but I would like to take a good look at your computer if you have the time. If that sounds good to you, then do this in the posted order:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Windows Proxy support DLL - {2DC9D850-144D-11E1-B3C9-10805E499D93} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winprox.dll
OpenWares "ContextuAd" adware

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. You have a distinct lack of spyware prevention software, I will provide links to some free programs once you are clean. This article is a good one to read.

Thanks for the fast reply and detailed instructions. It will take me a few days to follow up (there's a mound of essay exams to be graded on my desk) but I WILL follow up. Interesting about lack of spyware prevention software – AdAware, SpyBot, and Norton Corporate Antivirus are on this machine (NAV runs in the background). It may be relevant that the machine is linked to a university network (which presumably has protections in place, but I can't give you any details). Again, thanks!
Thanks for that feedback, a couple of things to mention. I can only see what HJT shows me and it did not show much in the way of malware. Here is more information about the BHO: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,141…adaware+updates and the other three lines are clutter, probably leftover from an earlier infection that was removed. When I get the report of a machine that has been "running sluggishly recently" my first thought is to look for junk that HJT can't see to rule that out. It may very well be that you have a network or maintenance issue and if you wish to have your IT people check everything on their end before continuing with the scans, you may certainly do that. Understand that once I complete my search, if I locate no malware, then I suggest other methods including the ones I mentioned. I might also say that any network protections you are receiving will surely help but you will be surprised at how many computers running NAV that I have to remove junk from. I am not pointing any fingers, but the best protection is worthless if not updated and maintained properly. I should also mention that unless you are using the TeaTimer function in Spybot, both programs, while being great at what they do, are passive and block nothing. This would also not be true if you were running Ad-aware's "Adwatch", which is available in the purchased version of the software. Recapping, if you wish to use only item #4 which is HJT to remove those items and save the scans for after someone considers others reasons for the computer's performance, please do so. The scans will take a couple of hours and may not be needed. I certainly hope this information helps. Here is some random information, and I need to say it is for the information only, I am NOT suggesting any program offered in the advertising:
