Hi,

Back in February, Siggyx gave me some great help with my PC. Now, I hope someone can help me fix my fiance's laptop.

After turning on the computer, it takes about 10 minutes before everything is loaded and ready to go. Everything is running extremely slowly. Click on IE and you have to wait about a 45 seconds for it to come up. Even just switching between windows that are already open takes a long time.

I installed, updated and ran Spybot and Ad Aware SE according to the directions on this website. Both programs found and removed several files, but the problem has not been solved.

I rebooted the computer, ran HJT. Here is the log. Thanks in advance for your help!

Well, no response yet… Hope it was nothing I said. :)

While waiting, I noticed that the computer needed a number of updates from Windows. I went ahead and downloaded them all. (Or at least I think it was all of them.)

Anyway, it didn't improve the laptops performance at all. It is barely usable and it has taken me over an hour just to post this. I ran HJT again in case the updates changed anything important. I will post a link to this thread on the board for threads that have not been replied to…

Thanks to anyone who can help. Here is the new HJT log.

Hello maxmillion33, welcome to the forum.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Thanks for the help! I followed your instructions. There doesn't seem to be much improvement. Here are the two logs:

OK. I think it took so long for the computer to boot everything up that I may have run HJT before it was finished. I ran it again and it seemed to detect more things. Interestingly, for a short time, the computer seemed to be fine. I then rebooted to see if it would reboot in a normal amount of time and now it is back to the way it was. :(

Here is a HJT log that I ran when it appeared to be working correctly:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK, I removed P2P Networking.
I then ran HJT fixed 10 of the 11 items that you listed. The 6th one (04-HKLM\..\Run:[P2PNetworking]…) was not listed. I guess because I removed it per your instructions. :)

I deleted all the files in the prefetch and temp folders.

I could not delete the Temporary Internet Files. Whenever I would click the "Delete Files" button, the hourglass would just hang. I tried it several times, at one point letting it run for 30 minutes. Eventually, the window just locked up and I had to close it out.

The computer is still running slow. When I reboot, the computer powers down, appears to restart and then the screen goes black. After about 5-10 minutes the screen comes back up. But the whole reboot process takes at least 30 minutes.

Clicking on the IE quick launch will bring up Explorer after varying amounts of time, from 10 seconds to a minute. Switching between windows or clicking on the "file" tab is not smooth. At least a couple seconds, if not more.

Here is the HJT log.

Lets also do this: click Start> Run> type in Cleanmgr. Tap enter and select C: to clean. Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I followed your instructions. It took over an hour, but it eventually it cleaned the disk.

Still not much improvement in performance. For example, I ran HJT and clicked on Run Scan and Save Log. It ran the scan right away, but took over five minutes to bring up the log.

Right now, typing and clicking between windows is fine. But I just tried to bring up Word and it took about 3 minutes to come up. During which time the computer locked up for 2-3 seconds several times.

Thanks!

I don't see any spyware/malware left in you log. We can try this and see if it helps.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Well, that seemed to do it. I've run several different programs and rebooted 4 or 5 times. Everything seems to be working well now! Thank you so much for your help, I'll make a donation too!
Good Job

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
