Very strange indeed. Try rebooting a couple of times and each time see if it shows back up. Some piece of software may not have installed/uninstalled correctly and may be adding that entry back in.

Second, I have an ipaq, and i know the program that is used for syncing (wcescomm.exe, etc.). However, I don't create mobile links, etc. This is a first gen ipaq, so i don't have internet connectivity, wireless or otherwise. Do i need this line?

da…another quick question. if inappropriate, that's cool. i just happen to be here. If you could point me in the right direction, that would be great. I have creative soundblaster sound card.d I had disabled the creative volume control, but then realized i liked it better than the windows controller, which i elected to have shown in the system tray. Now, both show in the tray. If i elect not to show in the tray, neither shows. it's both or nothing. any idea on how to get rid of the windows volume control from the tray? thanks.

Ok, to answer your questions. 1. This tells IE what page to load if a site cannot be found. 2. Yes, you should be able to use HJT to remove this entry. 3. HJT does not show everything that loads on startup, but it does show much of it. 4. Right-click on the windows volume control and choose Adjust Audio Properties. You can there uncheck the box labeled "Place volume icon in the taskbar"

Thanks! earlier, i unchecked that box (place volume icon in taskbar), and BOTH went away. when i checked again, they both came back. It worked this time, so i'll just accept it. thanks for all of your help. i think we can close this one out now. jeff

Glad to hear it. Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers. :P
  • On a regular basis, please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.
  • In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:
    • Ad-Aware SE. A tutorial on using Ad-Aware to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. You have this installed currently. Please keep it updated and run it on a regular basis.
    • Spybot-Search & Destroy. A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features. You have this installed currently. Please keep it updated and run it on a regular basis.
    • SpywareBlaster. A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.
    • SpywareGuard. A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.
    Keeping these programs up-to-date and running them regularly can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.
  • Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here.
  • Also make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.
