Hello,

I was recently helped by Micah 6:8 in removing some malware and asked for his assistance in removing istbar.exe from my computer. I have had little luck, even when going into the registry keys and trying to remove them that way.

Now I seem to be having different problems. When I'm browsing certain phrases are double underlined and linked to different sites like "urban myth" or "red wine" these seem to be imbedded ads to ebay or some tv show site. Very annoying! I also noticed a link bar that appears below my address bar in IE that I don't want there. I haven't downloaded anything recently, and have been visiting only trusted websites. Could these problems be related to my issues with "istbar.exe"? Anyway, here is my HJT logfile:

Reboot in normal mode.

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Then "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hey Micah,

I did as you instructed, but may have messed up the order. See I didn't have SpyBotSD on my computer and rather than have to find it and install it after running HJT I downloaded and installed it first. It tried to interfere with me removing some of the registry keys, but I managed to complete the procedure.

I ran adaware and removed the entries. Then ran SpybotSD and was able to remove all but one entry called: "ISearchTech.SideFind" Spybot tried to remove it again at startup but to no avail.

Here is the most recent HJT logfile. Please note the entries in bold. These entries have me wondering.

again, and post the results.

Hey Micah,

Did as you suggested. Here is the logfile for HJT, followed by a logfile of RegScan.

Istbar entries are still appearing, though some of them are related to a utility designed to remove Istbar that I downloaded from Symantec. Which didn't find anything btw. I think the utility might be out of date, but they haven't updated it.

Copy the contents of the following quote box into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ISTbar]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\ISTbar]

Save it to the desktop as fixme.reg.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Now the fixme.reg file on the desktop.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully".

Delete this folder if present:

C:\Program Files\ISTbar <– this folder

Reboot & run Spybot.

If it finds anything, you'll have to post the places where it's found, 'cuz it won't show up using Hijack This!

:)
Hey Micah, Did as instructed. Ran SpyBot and "ISearchTech.SideFind" is still appearing in HKEY_LOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\ISTbar The good thing is there is no other spyware/adware/malware appearing in any of the SpyBot scans.
Hey Micah, Yeah…When I last ran RegScan, it showed up.. Look at the last logfile I posted, at the end of the HJT Logfile I cut/paste the RegScan logfile. Nothing I've done will get rid of this thing!! It's very frustrating, though with SpyBot & Tea Timer running I haven't seen any other stuff showing up and my 'puter isn't doing anything wonky.

:)
Hello Micah,

I followed your instructions. Here is what I encountered:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software

ISTbar –> FOUND! Unable to delete: "Access Denied"

The only other entries Ifound were the following:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Component Categories

{00021494-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} FOUND! Deleted!

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains

contentmatch.net FOUND! Deleted!

Nothing else was found. I was very thorough!

Ran SpybotSD and "ISearchTech.SideFind" was still there and undeletable.

Should I assume that this is just an "orphaned" registry entry as you suggested?
Let's check for any hidden processes.

Please go here:

Silent Runners.org

Download/run the silentrunners.vbs script.

Norton will complain about it, so just tell it to "register" this script - It's safe.

When you run it, click "Yes" to the "Skip supplementary searches".

It will take a few minutes to run.

When it finishes, it will tell you what text file it put the results in (it will be in the same folder the VBS file was downloaded into).

Open it up with Notepad, and paste it into your next post, please.
:)

I see these in there:

"ZStart" = "c:\windows\system32\cxdxregt.exe DO0605" [empty string]

C:\Documents and Settings\Home User\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
"Zstart" -> shortcut to: "C:\Documents and Settings\Home User\Local Settings\Temp\zxinst12.exe DO0605" [empty string]

HKLM\Software\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\

-> {CLSID}\InProcServer32\(Default) = "C:\WINDOWS\system32\qlink32.dll" [empty string]

"{4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-8DBC-A42EB79CB428}" = "COMMUNICATOR" [from CLSID]
-> {CLSID}\InProcServer32\(Default) = "C:\WINDOWS\system32\communicator.dll" [empty string]

Can you verify that the files listed there (C:\Documents and Settings\Home User\Local Settings\Temp\zxinst12.exe, C:\WINDOWS\system32\communicator.dll) do/do not exist.

On the key you couldn't delete ("Access denied") can you navigate to it with Reglite, on it, and choose "Take ownership" (I think that's what it says) then delete it?

If this doesn't work, I have another method I will post this evening.
:)
