Hello,

I've encountered a number of things that I have concerns about. Namely "msdos.pif" and "istbar". I've tried to remove "istbar" with AdAware and Norton Antivirus with little luck. I rebooted and ran HiJack This.

Another concern is that I'm getting an alert from Norton Internet Security about a program called "ccApp.exe" trying to access the internet. I thought that "ccApp.exe" was Norton program. If so why is NIS creating an alert? Is it possible that another program has hijacked "ccApp.exe"? I notice that "ccApp.exe" appears in two locations in the logfile. Once in Program Files and another in System 32. Is this normal?

Anyway, here is my logfile:

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

I want to check some things before beginning any cleaning operations.

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.

Legitimate one:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe

MALWARE!!!!:

c:\windows\system32\ccapp.exe

First, please go to:

Start –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs

Remove "SurfAccuracy" (if present).

Download Killbox from here:

Killbox.zip

Unzip it, but don't run it yet.

Copy the file names in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
C (hold the key down, then press C):

c:\windows\system32\ccapp.exe
c:\windows\system32\msdos.pif
c:\windows\system32\uebtbx.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSDOS Security Service] msdos.pif

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service] ccApp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfAccuracy] C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy\SAcc.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [version] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Uebtbx.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MSDOS Security Service] msdos.pif

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Service] ccApp.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSDOS Security Service] msdos.pif

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [MSDOS Security Service] msdos.pif

Then click "Fix checked", and close Hijack This!

Run Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)

If "SurfAccuracy" was not in "Add/remove programs", please delete this folder:

c:\program files\surfaccuracy <— FOLDER
:)
Thanks Micah,

I followed all of your instructions and double checked everything. I checked all the boxes you indicated, and clicked "Fix Checked".

I then ran KillBox. Two of the files were deleteable but

"c:\windows\system32\uebtbx.exe"

didn't show up when I pasted it into the KillBox. I deleted the other 2 and then tried typing the last one (uebtbx.exe) in manually, but KillBox said the file did not exist.

I ran HiJackThis again and here is the logfile

NOTE: These are still showing up..

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service] ccApp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Service] ccApp.exe

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Service] ccApp.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Service] ccApp.exe

When the machine reboots, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Thanks again Micah,

I think it worked this time! What a tenacious little bugger that program is!

Here is the logfile…Please let me know if there is anything else I should remove.

Log looks good!!!

GOD bless you, Sir!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Thanks for all your help Micah, I just ran AdAware today and I still have "istbar.exe" showing up in my registry keys. I've removed it through AdWare but have little faith that it is actually gone. Is it adviseable for me to go directly into my registry and remove it from there? Or do you have an alternative method that you can proscribe? Thanks, CDBragg
Let's see where it's at.

Please download/unzip this:

RegScan.vbs

on Regscan.vbs, and search for this:

istbar

Paste the contents of the results into your next post.

If your anti-virus pops up, tell it to allow this script to run.

:)
Hey Micah, Thanks for responding so quickly. Here is the results from RegScan: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ; Regscan.vbs Version: 1.2 by rand1038 ; 04/09/2005 10:10:02 PM ; Search Term(s) Used: "istbar" ; 8 matches were found. ; The search took 21 seconds. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ISTbar] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ISTbar\Historyfiles] "C:\\Program Files\\ISTbar\\xml_istbar.xml"=dword:00000001 "C:\\Program Files\\ISTbar\\imagemap_normal.bmp"=dword:00000001 "C:\\Program Files\\ISTbar\\imagemap_over.bmp"=dword:00000001 "C:\\Program Files\\ISTbar\\version.txt"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ISTbar\Historystring] [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\ISTbar]
Hey Micah, I'm having problems deleting Istbar…I keep getting error messages and I'm unable to delete any of the files. Is there an order I should do them in? Or am I supposed to do something specific apart from just deleting them?
