Hi,
I would like to thank you for any help you can offer me in order
to discover if my computer has been infected with spyware.
When I connect to the Internet popups that seem to originate
from Windows appear on my screen.Among other malfunctions, I
am either being warned that the registry of my computer is
corrupt, or that spyware has infected my computer and that I
should connect to some specific website to download a free
repair tool. One of the messages that have appeared on the
screen of my computer said:
"Messenger Service
Message from SYSTEM to ALERT on 8/31/2005 9:49:28AM
SYSTEM ERROR!
System error detected in c:\Windows\System32\ Windows
suggests visiting www.cleanthispc.com to download free
repair tool."
Below is a summary of the scan that I performed using
HijackThis. Could you advise me if there is something that needs
to be removed?
Thanks,
Yiannis

Hello Yiannis, Welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help, I'll see what I can do. I don't see much in the log so something may be hidden from HJT. Please do this in the post order:
1) Messenger Service: This may be the Windows Messenger Service that is part of Windows sending you these messages. Look in this link and if this is the kind off messages you are receiving, then follow the instruction for your operating system and disable the Messenger Service.
http://www.itc.virginia.edu/desktop/docs/messagepopup/
2) These messages seem to becoming from Spyware Cleaner at checkforspyware.com/sc/ and/or myspywarecleaner.com/sc/ which is a rouge spyware product you can read about here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm Since it is not showing in the HJT log start by looking in Add Remove Programs, if you see Spyware Cleaner or anything that looks like, please uninstall it. Let's run some scans to see what we can remove.
3) Download CCleaner from this link:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions
http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.
3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs:
http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
5) Ewido scan:
Please download
Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
Install ewido security suite Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it. The program will now go to the main screen You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
On the left hand side of the main screen click update Then click on Start Update The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Once the updates are installed do the following:
Click on scanner Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.** You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action. DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections "If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now. Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report Click Save report . Save the report .txt file to your desktop. Now close ewido security suite.
** (Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")
6) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.
Thanks…pskelley

Slyware Warrior
Dear pskelley, thanks for the time you took to reply to my message.
I followed your advice and disabled the Windows Messenger Service. As a consequence, the pop ups have stopped to appear.
Furthermore, I downloaded the 4 programs you suggested. The Spybot-Search & Destroy system scan revealed 3 entries; an Alexa Related entry with a C:\winnt\web\related.htm link and 2 HitBox entries that contained 2 cookies, which I removed.
I then performed a system scan using Ad-Aware SE personal. The scan summary revealed the same infections as Spybot. Below is the log file created by the program:

After removing the infections using the specific software I performed a system scan with the ewido security suite which did not report any infections. Below is the report that was generated:

Does this report verifies that all spyware has been removed fom my computer?
I would like to thank you once more for the help you have offered me.
Thanks,
Yiannis
Hello Yiannis
You do nice work…except that you have given me a Ad-aware log when I requested:
6) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.
That Ewido scan report sure looks nice
Please post the HJT log, give me a few minutes to look it over and I'll let you know if you are clean. Thanks…Phil

Hello Yiannis, Good job
your HJT log is clean of malware. Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

I'll take a moment of your time to mention a few items that are starting everytime you bootup that you might want to consider starting manually when they are needed. These are optional and your call.

Here is information about msconfig if you need it:
http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ My last suggestion would be that you do one or two at a time, then run for a few days to make sure there is nothing negative that you wish to undo.
Safe surfing…Phil
