OK.. The list is actually shorter this time….

Only one file I have a question about:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Java - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll

Do you know what those are for?
Copy the file names in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
C (hold the key down, then press C):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\atairp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\FMFWR.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ICIOTRT.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\VGACTL.CPL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WUAUCLT.DLL
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\NANI.EXE

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!
Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\system32\atairp.exe reg_run

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Java - {9E248641-0E24-4DDB-9A1F-705087832AD6} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.dll

Then click "Fix checked and close Hijack This!.

Run Killbox.

In Killbox select "Delete on Reboot".

Click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
A few things. First, the pop-ups appear to have stopped. Second, do I need to be shutting down the iconned programs in the quick launch portion of the taskbar when you tell me to close all windows and programs? Third, when my computer rebooted this time, I got a winlogon.exe warning window that basically said it had recovered from a serious error and wanted me to send an error report {I said no to all four occurrences}. And lastly, here is the new log:

You got it that time!!!

I think the malware gasping it's last breath was responsible for the error.

You shouldn't have any more problems.

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I currently have Norton Systems Works 2005 Premiere Edition, Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1.0, Spybot S&D and AdAware Personal SE running on my machine. Out of those and IE-Spyad, which ones should I keep running and which should I get rid of? Any recommendations?
Keep them all. The only time people run into problems is when they have two programs active trying to accomplish the same task. Such as trying to run two antivirus programs. Out of all the ones you listed, the only one "active" all the time is Norton. All the others are "run on demand"…
Thanks for all of your time, Micah. I was about to pull hair out with all the pop-ups and "blue screens". God Bless you, JoeLeB Romans 12:6-8
I have my Norton Virus Scan running every night (because of the trouble we were just going through). For the past two nights it has found two file dealing with AproposMedia. It hasn't been able to get rid of them. Plus, when I go into the regedit or Windows Explorer to find the files, my screen freezes (although the cursor is still blinking) when I go into the find function either going through Ctrl F or File - Search. My HijackThis log now has an O16 - …\ax.phobos… entry (the last O16 entry) that I'm not sure of. Any ideas? Here is my latest log:

For the past two nights it has found two file dealing with AproposMedia.

They don't show up in the log.

Can you post the "full path names" (example: "C:\Windows\Virus.exe")?
Sorry for the late response; I was called out-of-town.

I was able to remove the files using Symantec's manual removal instructions.

Do you know what this line is and if it is needed?

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: ohb - {9ADE0443-2AB2-4B23-A3F8-AC520773DE12} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsrA1.dll (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot & make another log file to be sure it's gone.

Do you know what this line is and if it is needed?

O16 - DPF: {D719897A-B07A-4C0C-AEA9-9B663A28DFCB} - http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/d…/ITDetector.cab

The lines that start with "O16" are active-x components loaded on your machine by various web sites. Normally they are safe to "fix". If you go back to whatever web site loaded them, they will get re-installed (if you allow it).

Just an "FYI", I have a computer program I wrote that I use to assist in checking log files. It has a database of almost 750 known "malware" O16 entries that it checks for.

You don't have any malware "O16" entries present.
:)
I checked the O2 and the O16 lines for fixes. Both appear to be gone. Does the rest look OK?
