I haven't used Msconfig much, so please pardon my stupidity on the matter….

What's stopping you from selecting "Normal Startup"?

I having a difficult time comprehending just what is going on here.
:)
Normal startup will fire up ALL of the programs in the startup list, even the ones that I have deselected, which I don't want. I'd remove them from the list if I knew how…. His computer seems to be running nicely at this point. How long before I hear from the analysis people? THanks. DJ
Here's the list of things that are disabled: cfgmgr51 at RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr51.dll,DllRun istsvc at c:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe jusched at c:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe thevcr at c:\WINDOWS\System32\thevcr.exe realsched at "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot lpssxs at c:\WINDOWS\System32\lpssxs.exe reg_run AdDestroyer.Ink at c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AdDestroyer.Ink.Disabled If there's anything here that should be running, please let me know. Thanks! DJ
Hello DJ,

Jim has been called away and Bobbi Flekman will be following you now. The results of the analysis of WinCmapp are not conclusive yet, though it is definitely a bad file. You also have a couple of very nasty infections there, that are waiting to cause problems again. I also suspect from seeing earlier information that there are some even nastier infections hiding. When you recovered the files from the Recycle Bin you recovered infected files as well as legitimate windows system files.

What we need to do now is to start with a new HijackThis log which will show us what is now on the PC and locate the infections. We can then remove the infections with the approved tools so that you end with a fully clean PC. :)

Please scan again with HijackThis and post a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply'. We then will be able to give instructions for recovery. Bobbi Flekman is in Europe making his time zone different from the US.

Good Luck!
Also please create a list of programs that can be removed using Add/Remove Programs Start HiJackThis. Click "Config"->"Misc Tools"->"Open Uninstall Manager" ->"Save List". Save the log to a convenient location, and copy it into this thread.
Thanks for the help. Jim was great also.

Here's the HJT log:

Hi Dan,

Yep… Jim did a good job. From what I see there's not much left!

Please enable everything you have turned off in 'System Configuration Utility' (MSConfig.exe). This way your system will not hide any potential malware and hijackers. What I cannot see, I cannot fix!

Post a fresh log. Afterwards you can turn off everything you had turned off. Do NOT restart your computer while everything is turned on

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.

Do you know what these programs are?
  • snss
  • SymNet
  • Windows AFA Internet Enhancement
They sound shady. Could be that they're perfectly valid though.

I don't see a friewall in your log. If you don't have one, or use Microsoft's firewall in Windows XP, download Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm and install it.
Block everything that is not supposed to dial out!
I listed all of the disabled startup programs in Message #79 above, using the program name and the command line. Is that good enough?

From what I can gather online, snss is malware, symnet is some kind of audio enhancing software, and Windows AFA Internet Enhancement is malware.

Would you recommend that I turn on the Windows XP firewall or would it be better to use one of those links?

I also seem to have a program called wuauclt which might be bad. The opinions are split online, with some saying it's bad and some saying it's okay. Several people said that to test whether it's bad, you stop it in task manager, and if it starts right back up, it's the bad one. That's true in my case….

Hi Dan,

I listed all of the disabled startup programs in Message #79 above, using the program name and the command line.  Is that good enough?

I would like to have them in the HijackThis log. That way I can deal with them through HijackThis instead jumping through hoops to get to them.

cfgmgr51 at RunDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr51.dll,DllRun <– spyware
istsvc at c:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe <–spyware
jusched at c:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe <– Jave updater (legit)
thevcr at c:\WINDOWS\System32\thevcr.exe <– unknown to me, inconclusive from the Internet.  Submit this file to Online malware scan and tell me the result.
realsched at "c:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot <– RealPlayer's Update Utility (legit) but not needed.
lpssxs at c:\WINDOWS\System32\lpssxs.exe reg_run <– Qoologic Trojan! Major hijacker!
AdDestroyer.Ink at c:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AdDestroyer.Ink.Disabled  <– Link disabled by Spybot.

From what I can gather online, snss is malware, symnet is some kind of audio enhancing software, and Windows AFA Internet Enhancement is malware.

That's what I found as well, but programs may share names, which is why I asked. Since you reply the things found on the net I assume that you don't know them. I suggest you uninstall the snss and Windows AFA Internet Enhancement programs by opening "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, selecting these two entries and clicking "Remove" for each of them. If one of the uninstallers wants to download stuff or needs an Internet connection, skip that one and report them to me.

Would you recommend that I turn on the Windows XP firewall or would it be better to use one of those links?

I recommend using one of the links I have posted since Microsoft's is just monitoring one way. Ergo, doing half the job.

I also seem to have a program called wuauclt which might be bad.  The opinions are split online, with some saying it's bad and some saying it's okay.  Several people said that to test whether it's bad, you stop it in task manager, and if it starts right back up, it's the bad one.  That's true in my case….

wuauclt.exe is Windows Update. It checks to see if there are updates available.

Please don't try to check and fix things yourself. Let me look at them. Otherwise this is going to be a long and painful operation.

Can you still post a log from HijackThis after enabling everything in MSConfig. Then we can clean that up as well.

How is your computer running now? Better?
When I tried to uninstall snss it said there was an error, that it may have already been uninstalled, and did I want to remove it from the Add/Remove programs list. I said yes. Then I tried to uninstall the Windows AFA Internet Enhancement and the screen just blinked and the program remained. Attempting to uninstall doesn't seem to have any effect.

I will submit thevcr.exe to online malware scan, but in the meantime, here's the HJT log:

Hi Dan,

let me know what Jotti had to say.

Then I tried to uninstall the Windows AFA Internet Enhancement and the screen just blinked and the program remained.  Attempting to uninstall doesn't seem to have any effect.

Let's see if we can get there in another way.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

RegSearch Options File

[Search]
Enhancement

[Exclude]

[Options]
Filter=KVDLU

Download Registry Search and extract it. Doubleclick the icon to run and click on "Import…". Select the file you created above. Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds. Post that here.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsync] C:\WINDOWS\System32\lpssxs.exe reg_run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked".

Restart your computer in Safe Mode. How do I Safe Boot my computer?

Show hidden files. How do I show hidden files?
At the end if the fix you can return the files to hidden status if you want.

They're probably gone, but check anyway. Just to be sure.

Delete the following files in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\lpssxs.exe

Delete the following folders in red (it could be that they are deleted already):

C:\Program Files\ISTsvc

Restart your computer and post a new log in this thread.
I couldn't submit "thevcr.exe" to that site because it doesn't exist on my computer…I searched the whole computer for it.

…and here is the registry search results.

The files in red didn't exist.

Thanks!!
DJ
Hi Dan,

I couldn't submit "thevcr.exe" to that site because it doesn't exist on my computer…I searched the whole computer for it.

Okay. then we'll get rid of it.

The files in red didn't exist.

I had already expected that, since you already had run Ewido and friends.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as Export.bat and save it on your Desktop.

regedit /e Output.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WAFAIE"
notepad Output.txt
del /q Output.txt

Locate Export.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. This will open Notepad with some text in it. Post that.

Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and check the boxes next to all these items.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [thevcr] C:\WINDOWS\System32\thevcr.exe

Then close all windows, and browsers, except HijackThis. Tell HijackThis to "Fix checked". Restart your computer.

Since I see some strange items in the log from RegSearch I would like it if you ran AdAware and Spybot again, after getting the latest updates from them.

Check your computer with the following free anti-virus/anti-trojan products.

Housecall Anti Virus Panda Anti Virus Trojan Scan Bit Defender

And, here's the link to McAfee AVERT Stinger and instructions for use.

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.

After all these instructions please post a new log from HijackThis.
Hi Bobbi: I ran AdAware and Spybot,, and in general the machine seems to be running very smoothly. HOWEVER, I ran out of time! My son had to move to college, and took his computer with him. I know we weren't finished. If he has any problem in the future, he will probably go to some of the support people at his college, but I will also refer him to this thread. For now, however, I must be content to thank you and everyone else who has helped me, VERY SINCERELY, and extend my gratitude for the existence and good work of this site. Much obliged! DJ+
