Go to:

Start –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs

Remove:

Freeprod Toolbar

Media Access

Surf SideKick

Then reboot.

When you remove Surf SideKick, it will give you some sort of "security code" that you have to type in before it will uninstall. Go ahead and type it in.

Me and someone else "went round and round" about this last weekend. He was afraid it would make things worse. He fianlly gave in, and entered the code, and it uninstalled without a hitch.

I'm glad to see it in there 'cuz it's a bear to remove otherwise.

When finished uninstalling, and after the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.

There are a few things to deal with "the hard way"…… ;)
:)

P.S. Do you have a clue how the new "stuff" got on there in the 1st place?
Apparently, my son (this is his computer) downloaded "a couple" of tunes to the computer using WinMX in the last 24-48 hours. I have long suspected that this was one of the sources of his continual infections. I'm still not sure how it happens….I don't understand how a .wav or MP3 file could include a virus that would then be able to execute itself, but I'm no teckie. I was kinda hoping you'd tell me that the new stuff was picked up because we hadn't quite cleaned every last thing off of the computer. If it is indeed the WinMX that's the problem, he'll have no choice but to stop using it. Do you have any suggestions as to 1) how he could safely use it, or 2) What he could do instead? I understand that you may not want to give advice regarding this, given the touchy legal nature of it, but any suggestions you have would be appreciated. In any case, I told him not to d/l anything for now.

Another question: I had a conversation with him in which he told me, "well I might as well get an Apple if I want to download tunes….they don't get viruses!" Is that true?

P.S. I used the uninstaller on SurfSideKick (with security code) and Freepod Toolbar, but the MediaAccess one said it couldn't be uninstalled because it wasn't really there or something….it asked me if I wanted to remove it from the "add/remove programs" and I said yes, though I doubt that did anything.

Thanks!!
DJ
Hi Micah: I'm writing from my computer. I tried again to uninstall Surfsidekick, and it required another reboot, and the computer froze on reboot. I tried twice more, and it's frozen both times. I think VBouncer might be responsible, since it keeps throwing up alerts during the bootup. Anyway, I can't make the HJT log until I can reboot, but I have a hunch the SSK is still going to be there….now what? Thanks much DJ
If I had known all the new malware was present, I would have never suggested running Ewido until we removed some of the new malware first. I was only trying to get rid of "usbnl386.exe". That was the only known bug that I new about. Can you boot in "safe mode" and make a log file? Or run Ewido and get it to restore only the things related to "Surf Sidekick"?
I really have to apologize for the added malware….I should have made sure nothing got downloaded. It's certainly not your fault.

I was able to reboot and then quickly go into task list and shut down vbouncer and ssk. That seemed to solve the freezing problem; in any case, I now have a HJT file in normal mode.

Again, I realize your time is valuable (it's been VERY valuable to me), and I'll do my best not to make your work more difficult.

I don't know what Ewido does, but my uneducated guess is that it didn't cause the freezing problem.

Glad you got the critter to boot….

I want to concentrate on "SurfSidekick"…

Copy the file names in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing
C (hold the key down, then press C):

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskCore.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\SSK3_B5 Seedcorn 4.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\SSK3_B5 Seedcorn 4.exe

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Run Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Done. However, Killbox couldn't kill the files, so I rebooted into safe mode, and then it was able to kill them. HOWEVER, weirdly, only the first 5 files copied when I tried to paste from clipboard (both in normal and safe mode). I tried to delete the others individually by typing them in, and they all said the file could not be found.

Here's the new log….it still didn't die??! AAARGGH!

Let's give it one more try.

I new this was going to be a battle since "add/remove programs" didn't work.

I've been ovelooking something that may not be harmless…

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wincmap] "C:\Program Files\winCMAPP\wincmapp.exe"

If you recognize that, then leave it out of the "fix".

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\program files\surfsidekick 3 <— FOLDER

c:\program files\wincmapp <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Welp, I did as you said, and while I was deleting folders, I deleted a couple of others like vbouncer and media access…

HOWEVER, now I can't reboot into normal mode. The machine tries a couple of times and then sends me to an error page with a 30-second timer. There, my options are to reboot in safe, safe with networking (presently) and normal, or to try the last known good configuration. I tried the latter, and got the error message again.

Here's my HJT log:

Sorry this isn't going more smoothly. Talk to you tomorrow I hope.

DJ

Sorry this isn't going more smoothly.

Per aspera ad astra

Let's see what is trying to run when you boot.

I think this will give me a fairly good picture.

Copy the text in the following quote box into Notepad:

reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run > reg.txt
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-167367719-2909908708-4152928107-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run >> reg.txt
reg query HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-167367719-2909908708-4152928107-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce >> reg.txt
notepad reg.txt

Save it to your desktop as ff.bat.

Now, the ff.bat file on the desktop. A Notepad window will open up.

Please paste it's contents into your next post.

If it's too long for one post, split it up as required so I can get it all.
:)
