Hi karamazov;

It would be helpful to know which program provided the "error" concerning a computer hijacking. It could be a malicious program that is trying to get her to click on it and download a Virus onto her PC, or it could be a protection program that she has, that is advising her of a real threat.

I detect no problems in her HJT logfile. My suggestion is as follows and will give her a good cleanup and possibly reveal the source of the "error".

Please use the following links to run one, or more of these online Virus Scanners and let them fix whatever they find.

If you are using any of the browsers listed just below, the following online Virus scanning site is compatable.
http://be.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h…call_launch.php
If you are using any of these browsers:
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Netscape (6+)
Mozilla (1+)
Firefox (all)
Opera (7.5+)

Internet Explorer users can also use the following links.

When using Trend Micro, be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location, so you can delete it yourself.
Bitdefender and let it delete everything it finds.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

And here are links to two online Trojan Scanners. Lets run one, or both of these too.

http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

And here:
http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

If you are unable to get or use either of the online Trojan Scanners above………..

Go here http://www.trojanhunter.com/ and download and run the free trial of Trojan Hunter.

Then, Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version and have been updated today. Then run full systems scans as described below.

Install and how to use the NEW Ad-aware SE
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind…showtutorial=48

Reboot after using Ad-Aware SE.
Download the VX cleaner plug in for Adaware. Install it, then open Adaware & go to *add-ons* & run the plug-in. If anything is found, select *clean system* & when done, reboot & run Adaware & let it finish the clean-up. Reboot again.

Would you please download the Spybot S&D program from here Spybot S&D and install it.
  • Select Search for updates.
  • Then select all available updates that are displayed in the white box.
  • Select a download mirror nearest your location.
  • Then select Download updates .
  • Shut down and restart Spybot.
  • Select the Search and destroy icon and click on Check for Problems.
  • Delete/fix anything that spybot lists In RED.
.

Then, please REBOOT, to allow Spybot to finish working

The following step is important as you may have several malware files in your temp directories.

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\Your User Name (repeat for all other user names in documents and settings)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then browse to the C:\Window\Temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.
Then in internet explore click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Then please run Hijack This, copy the log and post it here, in this string, using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please do not change anything in the fresh log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Ok, I ran all the ones that you said, and they all said I was competly clean. Mom says that it was Sygate personal firewall that warned her. Also, windows has been coming up with a lot of blue screen errors, and the computer has been freezing a lot.
Hi karamazov

Here's a link that will explain the cleanup utilities built into Windows ME.
Ask your mom to run the following, in this order…..
Disk cleanup
ScanDisk
and then Defragment the hard drive.
All are explained in detail at the linked site.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsME/using/c…diskcleanup.asp

Then, if that does not have the desired result, Windows ME has another utility that may do the job for her, but I would use this as a "last resort". Go back to a time before the problems began. System Restore, can sometimes cure what ails an ME machine.
Ok, I did all that, and I'm still getting the same blue screen VXE (or sommething) errors. Sometimes it takes serveral times before windows will even start. Also, someone seems to have disabled and deleted all the restore points..
Hi karamazov; You'll need to be as specific as possible, concerning the "blue screen errors". When do they occur ? What do they say ? Also, check to be sure that System Restore is turned on and set a new restore point. What do you have to do "several times" in order to get windows to start ?
Mostly VXE erros. Next time they come up I'll write it down and come back and tell you. Either that or I get a "system busy" error. They occur at rather annoying times lol. But I cant pin-point exactly when. They seem rather random. I also get stuff like "Windows cant open ". Usually browser windows, but sometimes things like AIM, and even AVG. Sorry for not being clear. I have to reboot several times before windows will load completly.
Hi karamazov; Please scan with Hijack This again and post a fresh log. I'd like to have a look at it, after those scans were done and the programs I suggested were ran.

Hi karamazov; Your HJT log looks fine. We could do a couple of fixes, but I do not believe that would have any effect on your PC. I'll wait until you have had the opportunity to do what we discussed earlier and post back, so we can see just what the problem might be.
Sorry, I'm a bit out of it lately. I have done all that stuff, and it all comes back clean. And to my knowledge, after do it, the computer starts fine, with no blue screens :)
Hi karamazov;
That is good news indeed. Now maybe your mom can enjoy her PC without a lot of bother. Now that we have it clean, lets keep it that way, by doing the following. These Programs will go a long way in keeping her safe and secure on the Internet.

First, lets clear out all those bad restore points.
Win ME
To disable System Restore:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

Protection Recommendations:

If you dont have these three FREE programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
Glad we could be of help. :D
