Hello may&hana'sdaddy and welcome to TomCoyote forum. You do have a few items that need to be removed but only one is nasty, that is called Netster and it is adware which I will name in the removal. There are several DPF (016 in the log) that Google does not know. I will schedule them for removal but if you know they are safe you may leave them, just be sure to get rid of Netster. Before I start, I want you to know there are several free opportunites to learn more about this process. If you have an interest, let me know and I will provide the information.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

(above is Kontiki/optional but missing a file, if you use it I would download it again)
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
(remove this if you did not set it)
O16 - DPF: {978611AD-7587-4A3B-B8E1-DC44DAB94239} (InstallHelper Class) - http://survey.prod.there.com/qualsurvey/Th…stallHelper.cab

(above two are optional, your call)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

I suggest a good cleaning with this free utility: http://www.ccleaner.com/ using these instructions: Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Make sure you clean under the two tabs.

Post a new log in this same thread for a final check. Include any feedback you think I should have.

Hi,

Many thanks! Followed you're directions - new log is at the end of this message.

I'm very interested in any info you can send me to learn more.

I googled "dpf" but the best I came up with was "disk placement format"., with no real definition. Is this simply an address to find the class, etc.?

Some other DPF listings - Yahoo Chat (2) and Foster City maps - are old, and I no longer use those sites. Safe to remove, if no software present?

Thanks for your time and help! :)

Jeff

Thank you, I will look at the log in a moment.

I'm very interested in any info you can send me to learn more.

I will post that information in a short while as an addon to this same thread.

I googled "dpf" but the best I came up with was "disk placement format"., with no real definition. Is this simply an address to find the class, etc.?

These are ActiveX plugins and you need to be careful with them, many hostiles get onboard in that way. Later information will suggest how to set these controls in your browser for your best protection.
DPF = Downloaded Program Files. These can be monitored in IE > Internet Options > Settings > View Objects. They can also be deleted from there, just highlite them and hit your delete key and authorize the change.

Some other DPF listings - Yahoo Chat (2) and Foster City maps - are old, and I no longer use those sites. Safe to remove, if no software present?

You may remove any DPF/ActiveX you wish, if you should visit the site again, you would be prompted to download the .cab file again and have a choice to make if your contols are set properly.

You HJT log is clean so Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

Here you go:

TomCoyote Classroom: Entrance requires a little effort on your part as will be explained in the link. Busy place with great teachers, etc. but it does require effort and self-motivation
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=1421

SpywareInfo Bootcamp: Most folks are admitted, easier to get into than classroom.
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=34

Malware Removal University: Smaller school so you should get more personal attention. ChrisRLG and Nellie2 (both teachers there) are friends and were my teachers here at TC for a while before Chris opened the site. A good one, but it is in the UK in the event the time difference applies.

Good luck with your decisions and your training should you choose to start. Hope to see you out in the field in the near future with your sword in your hand. If you see me, please PM to say hello.
Thanks…Phil Skelley
