Good Morning…

I've tried to be a good boy and stay away from all the spyware/malware/etc.
I actually believe that my wife fell for one of those fake "your computer may
be infected" popups…

I run WinXP…
To this point I've turned off System Restore and run
both Spybot & AdAware in Safe Mode. Both programs find the
offenders. They are :
VX2 (I have the VX2 addon for AdAware)
Promulgate
CallingHome.Biz
FunWebProducts
IE Plugin (lu.dat)
MyWebSearch
NicTechNetworks.Zestyfind

I allow both programs to clean the problems. When I reboot my
computer to Real Mode and re-run both programs, the critters
come back. In addition, and based on the number of popups
that I get, I don't believe that "I'm Clean".

Any help you can provide will be most appreciated!
Sincerely,
lb

Good Morning pskelley…

Thanks for the reply. As of this point, I have been unable to rid our
computer of the nasty critters. As soon as I go online, the pop-ups
come one after another. Based on AdAware, Spybot & MS Anti-Spyware
scans, I'm clean. I know that's not the case.

Below is the most current Hijack This scan.
(Scan is as of 8:00AM this morning)
Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

Larry Brooks

Hello Larry, Thanks for the second log. The line that is an indicator for Look2Me was in the first log: O20 - Winlogon Notify: Internet Settings - C:\WINDOWS\system32\k4jsle171h.dll
but I don't see it in this new log. Popups are a classic symptom of this infection so I am going to run the tool anyway, before I start I want to ask about the aol toolbars, do you use them? If not I will remove them a little later. Thanks to all who worked long and hard to give us this tool.
Follow the directions exactly:

Your HijackThis log shows evidence of a 'Look2Me' infection. This will take several posts to fix.

Here are the first instructions:

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Thanks…Phil

but I don't see it in this new log.

Thanks…Phil

Hi Larry, one favor please, don't "Quote" all of my instructions, I can scroll back to see what I said. Wastes space and makes the thread longer and harder to view. Thanks.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new Hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Note : Once the PC has restarted if a log does not appear or the icons didn't disappear, run the "second.bat" located inside the L2mfix folder.

Thanks…Phil
Good Afternoon Phil….

As per your request (without the quote ;)

First part of the post is the Look2Me logfile
Second part is the latest Hijack This logfile
Thanks….again!

Hi Larry, Looks like Look2Me was there and the fix was able to kill it. Because that infection is a nasty one, I am going to set you up for a few scans. If you would prefer not to run them, and the computer is working ok now, then complete the portion from HJT down only. Your option.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R3 - URLSearchHook: AOLTBSearch Class - {EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
O3 - Toolbar: AOL Toolbar - {DE9C389F-3316-41A7-809B-AA305ED9D922} - C:\Program Files\AOL\AOL Toolbar 2.0\aoltb.dll
O8 - Extra context menu item: &AOL Toolbar Search - res://c:\program files\aol\aol toolbar 2.0\aoltbhtml.dll/search.html
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZBxdm066YYUS
ADW_WEBSEARCH.K

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Use this information to clean temp and TIF files:
http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm
http://www.safecomputing.umn.edu/guides/tempdirectories.html

5) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Test drive the computer and let me know how it is running now.

CCleaner will get anything you missed.

6) When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed follow these instructions:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Hey now Phil….

Whew…..the last set of instructions took me quite some time to accomplish.
I followed every instruction to the letter…..Let's hope that the effort was worth it….

Below you will find the (hopefully) final HijackThis log…

It looks clean to me, but, I'm not the expert.

I haven't gone online yet, I guess I'm being too paranoid….The last time
I thought I had this thing beat, it came back with a vengance.

Cross your fingers….

Thanks again for your help!

Sincerely,

Larry Brooks

These are all optional but there are booting everytime you start your computer. If you need some resources, and a little more speed at startup, there you are.

Good luck and safe surfing…Phil :wavey:

Hey now Phil…. To be completely honest, boot up is EXTREMELY slow and the system runs slowly at times. I should probably upgrade to 512 megs of ram….. If it's ok to knock out some of the items that run at start-up and it will speed things up, I'm all for it! I patiently await your reply… You are the man! peace, lb:)
OK Larry, read the links under the items, some can be turned off in Msconfig and started manually if you need them. Others have instructions for shutting them down until needed. I suggest you do a couple at a time so if there is an effect you don't like you will know what caused it. That is a load of stuff to bootup everytime and you should see the additional speed once they are all stopped. Let me know, I may have a few other ideas. I'll leave the thread open for a few days for this. As far as RAM goes, there is no such thing as too much in XP, put in as much as you can afford, cheapest way to upgrade. Thanks…Phil :)
Good Morning Phil…. I did the research as you suggested and stopped all those items from loading at startup. It made a big difference in the boot time. Thanks for the suggestion. I finally sucked it up this morning and went online….I've been online for about 20 minutes and no pop-ups! I can't tell you how relieved I am. Without your patience and expertise, I seriously doubt that I would have gotten through this without having to format the drive and re-install everything. Bless your heart! If there is anything that I could ever do for you (even though I haven't a clue as to what that would be) please feel free to ask….I'll do the best I can. Next stop….CompUSA to purchase some additional memory! Thank you so much! Sincerely, Larry Brooks
