Bugging me for too long

hi, i tried to get this resolved in the SWI forum but I made chgs to my system (locked it down?/allow only certain sites) and it has been hard to get to different pages on SWI.
Anyway, I suspect that someone is snooping (small-town living!) and I want to feel more secure. I noticed several 'buddies' on my instant messenger list, but I had never used im, and still don't really know how. I tried my best to 'block' users, but I'm not sure if I'm successful. I saw the im icon in my start tray yesterday, and I hadn't been in it. I also had been seeing notepad and wordpad icons in there after never having used them-but i do now. Also, sometimes I am knocked off my aol connection when i have my connection keep alive activated. I spend a lot of time on the internet.
I have adaware SE Personal Build 1.06r1 and Spybot loaded, and i use them almost daily. spybot can't seem to get rid of huntbar - the nice person who tried to help me at SWI said adaware should get it, but it is still showing up. I have mcaffee firewall that comes with my aol, and i have norton antivirus. I had to uninstall service pack 2 because it was causing some kind of problem. I use dial-up and have heard that other methods make it easier for people to snatch what you're typing.
I'm even suspicious of my satellite tv connection ! PLEASE don't call me paranoid because, from what I've been reading, these things happen more than we know.

Here is the latest hjt. How do I know that hjt has been saved correctly on my computer? Thanks in advance !

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

O23 - Service: .NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe (file missing)

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Now, please go to:

Start –> Run

In the box type in services.msc then hit < Enter > (or click OK)

In the Name column for:

.NET Framework Service (.NET Connection Service)

< Double-click > it.

In the dialogue box that pops up, check in the Path to executable box.

It should say: C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe

That's how to be sure you have the right one.

Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process.

In the Startup type box, change it to Disabled.

Click Apply then OK

Close the services.msc window.

Delete the offending Service

Open HijackThis and click Config –> Misc Tools –> Delete an NT service.

In the Delete window, type .NET Connection Service and press OK.

OK any prompts, close Hijack This!.

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Did it! Just to let you know, when I got to:
"Now, click Stop to stop that rogue process" –'stop' wasn't an option
"In the Startup type box, chage it to Disabled" – it was on 'automatic' and I chgd
"Delete the offending Service" – 'Where? I got the desktop screen'

Still, I followed your instructions and the logfile is posted below. But before I let you disappear into the sunset, I'd like to thank you for all your help–and the welcome. Second, I'd like to pick your brain a bit more to see if there is anything that I should do -going forward- to keep away the boogeymen. I'm on the internet A LOT.

Log looks good.

Here's my list of infection prevention measures.

GOD bless you!!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
