Hello jonmcwhite, Welcome back to the forum. I see you worked with KotaGuy earlier and he is one of the best. This computer is loaded up with adware, some nasty varieties also. I usually mention them but there are two many to mention. I wish to use some scans first as they get to places HJT can't, then if anything is left we will follow up with HJT. Please proceed like this:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure your do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

Thanks…pskelley

I await the next step.

Jon
Whoa Jon, did you look at all of the junk Ewido cleaned up for you. The scan sure makes my job easier also. Review the stuff, I saw some cookies in there you may be missing in Firefox. I looked at CCleaner and it seems it does not get them, if Ad-aware or Spybot do not you may have to remove them manually.

A few words about the balance of the fix. Much of this may be cosmetic and Ewido may have already removed most of the malware but we still want to be careful to remove all of the junk. As you can see, this stuff was running mostly from either temporary folders or Prefetch. CCleaners will clean those areas along with the other scans but we want to take a hard look at all temp and Prefetch folder to make sure all of this stuff is gone. On that note, please follow these instructions.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…://my.yahoo.com

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Program Files\CSBB\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ >>> folder

C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\ >>> folder

C:\documents and settings\demon cat\local settings\temp\a.exe >>> file (delete everything in that temp folder)

C:\documents and settings\demon cat\local settings\temp\ntW.exe >>> file (deleted all in folder above) (not the folder just the files)

C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll >>> file (delete if there)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\IEHost.exe >>> file

Search for these: E6F1873B.DLL,D9EBC318C << if you see them delete them.

Locate and delete all of the contents of all TEMP folder (not the folder) like C:\Windows\Temp <<< empty the folder

Information if you need it: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/deletingtempfiles.htm

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Now run CCleaner again making sure to clean under both the Windows and Application tabs, then click on "Issues" and if anything is located make sure you backup when prompted for safety.

Restart the computer and post a new HJT log for a final look. Please include any feedback you think I should have.

Thanks…Phil

This is the resulting log. Could not get into Demon Cat folder despite enabling hidden files and folders. Did not find any of the specific files on your list but did the temp folders and the prefetch as requested.

Are we there yet?

Jon
Whoa Jon, way to go this HJT log is clean  Give yourself a big pat on the back, this was one infected computer. How is it running now?

This is the resulting log. Could not get into Demon Cat folder despite enabling hidden files and folders. Did not find any of the specific files on your list but did the temp folders and the prefetch as requested.

Sometimes we have to go to safe mode to delete some of the stuff, but I am interested in this folder: C:\documents and settings\demon cat\local settings\temp\a.exe In this case we only wanted to delete the infected a.exe file but it was in a valid folder (temp) In Docs and Setting in a User Folder call "Demon Cat". Do you have multiple users on this computer? Since this is where some infected files where, chances are (unless I miss my guess) the user "Demon Cat" was online when at least some of the infections occured. If you have multiple users, let me know and I am interested in who "Demon Cat" is. Hoping for some feedback.

Since the log is clean: Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

If you are reading this information…thank a teacher, If you are reading it in English…thank a soldier.
Demon Cat is one of my 13 year old sons. I was able to get into his folders finally but there is no a.exe, there is an a.dll. Is that a deletable file? There is also an ntw.dll (not .exe) here as well. Jon
Jon, If these items are in a temp folder, delete them. Make sure anything in this folder is deleted:
C:\documents and settings\demon cat\local settings\temp\ if you want a look at what those items are, you can check them here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/ here: http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html or here: http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
in case you can't delete those temp items in normal mode you may have to do it in safe mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

I am keeping your thread open for this communication so let me know what you find…Phil
