Thankyou
Hello Wyvernn and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Sorry for the wait :( Let's do a good clean up and see what happens. We need to run the tool to fix the Elitum Infection in safe mode, let's download the tools then enter safe mode to run them. All will clean better in safe mode with nothing running but basic windows programs. Proceed like this:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and wait until I tell you to run the two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.

3) Ewido scan: Download and update, wait until you are in safe mode and I tell you to run it.Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) You will want to print the instruction or save them in a notepad on the desktop so you can see them in safe mode.

5) Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

6) Once in Safe Mode, please run LQfix.bat.

7) Run Spybot followed by Ad-aware, remove anything they locate. Both programs make backups for you.

8) Run Ewido, make sure you choose to delete or at least quarantine anything found. If there is something you believe to be valid, pass it and I will see it in the scan results.

9) Run CCleaner, when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure your do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with and feedback you have. We may have more to do with HijackThis.

Thanks…pskelley

Whilst waiting for a reply I tried reverting my computer to earlier settings with no success and deleted McAfee firewall which was giving me error messages. That made a huge improvement but there were still a lot of things not working very well for example I could only run windows media player once after restarting and winamp wasn't working at all.

I have run all the programs and fixes and they managed to find and fix a hell of a lot of stuff. Computer does seem to be working much better now. Winamp and media player are working fine and some other programs are responding to me now.

Thanks for replying and helping me :D
Good job executing those complex instructions  I was afraid we we would have to reinstall the media players, glad to hear they are working ok. Seems like the scans did their job, especially the one miekiemoes made for us and the Ewido scan. You can keep that scan if you wish, after the trial period you no longer receive the realtime protection but the updates and scanner are yours for as long as you wish.
Let's see how the HJT log looks now.

The first four lines were put there by Dell to try to keep you looking at their advertisment, unless you use those lines, and you can see where they direct you to by clicking on the link, I suggest you remove them as clutter and I will schedule that so you must pass over the instructions if you do not wish to remove them. The other items must go. If you need a link to Dell, put one in favorites.

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.dell.co.uk/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Who are you going to kill today?
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O4 - Global Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZB

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Once that is done, post one more HJT log for a last look and you should be good to go. I'll have some great information to help you stay clean and safe and some last instructions for cleaning out System Restore to make sure nothing bad is hiding there.

Cheers…Phil
Ok done I've kept the line that adds "who are you going to kill today?" as a window title because I find it funny.

Thanks again, :)

One question, is it always best to run virus scanners, cleaners and programs that delete spyware in safe mode?

While it is not always necessary, the scans will do a better job in safe mode. If I am still receiving symptoms from something unseen, I will often run Ewido a second time in diagnostic mode and it always locates additional junk. I do however, suggest maintenance be done in safe mode. Scandisk, defrag, etc. always perform better and complete the maintenance quicker in safe mode especially in older operating systems.

You are good to go  and Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
