Make sure that you have no browser windows open as this could prevent the fix from working properly. Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

Hi Daemon, Spybot is still detecting smitfraud c and I'm still getting scam alerts when online. Needless to say I don't repond to these! There are no apparent problems apart from this. However I have avoided any on line banking or anything else that needs a password (apart from this). Am at a bit of a loss as to what I can do to stop my head exploding with rage!! :rant2: Really appreciate what you have done so far… thanks
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Click here to download ewido security suite - it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log.
Hi Daemon. Managed to follow most of your instructions. I've included a new hijackthislog, the smitfiles.txt log and the ewido log. However, I didn't manage to get a pandactivescan shortcut. You must surely realise by now that when it comes to computers I am a little less than intuitive! I did manage to do a panda on-line scan that found nothing. If you need th panda thing please send specific instructions… sorry!

The smitfiles.txt log that was definately on my desk top earlier has now gone - honest. I guess I'll do it all again tomorrow. In the meantime I'm off to sob into my pillow  Thank you for your patience… sob, sob
Still have smitfraud c on board. Ewido identified 15 items, many were infections some were query infections. I don't have a clue whether they could be deleted or not, so I took no action as per your instructions - I think they are the ones in the list above that have "ignored" after them??
