Hello cman2006;
Sorry it took so long for you to get a reply. The volunteers here are quite busy.

While having a cursory look at your logfile I did notice some definate problems and some things you may want to consider removing.

First,
First, please open Add/Remove programs and uninstall New.Net or NewDotNet from there if listed. If it is not listed, follow these instructions:

· From a computer that has Internet access, click on the following link:
http://www.new.net/support/uninstall6_76.exe.
· Download and save uninstall6_76.exe to Local Disc C
· Click on Start.
· Click on Run.
· In the Open window type, C:\uninstall6_76.exe.
· Click on the OK button.
· After removal, you may be prompted to reboot. Please reboot if not prompted.

Under No Conditions should you attempt to remove New.Net by using Hijack This, or by any other means not mentioned here.

Next:
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Close ALL windows except HJT

4. SCAN with HJT

5. POST the new log in this thread using the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.
If you are still having problems, please advise what they are, as best you are able.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGITIMATE AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

Hi cman2006
It looks like New.Net has been removed successfully.

There is something I would like to ask. Did you install Messenger Plus3 and do you wish to keep it ? The reason I ask, is that when it is installed and the "Sponsor Software" is accepted with it, then you get the LOP infestation as an added benifit. I see no sign of a LOP infestation in your HJT log, so that does not seem to be a problem. When installed without the "Sponsor Software" there is usually no problem.

You have the Broadjump program on your computer. It is not a true spyware program, but it may have been installed on your system when you got cable Internet from your cable company. The software collects information on your Internet activity and sends it to your ISP so that your ISP can serve you advertisements related to the type of sites you visit. Fix the line in Hijackthis and read this to uninstall it: http://support.cox.net/custsup/downloads/cfd_remove.shtml

Next:

Please download the stand-alone version of CWShredder
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Then close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Next:
Please set your computer to show all files.

* Double-click My Computer.
* Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
* Click the View tab.
* Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
* Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
* Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next:
Close all browser windows and RUN HijackThis.
Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following entries:

The following are recommended fixes:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

Now with all the items selected, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button.

Next:
Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK, and delete them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruzfjef.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe The "?" could be anything.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

Please note: The following are recommended removals and if removed here, must also be Uninstalled/Removed in Add/Remove Programs.

C:\Program Files\BroadJump
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real
C:\Program Files\AWS
C:\Program Files\etea

If you were unable to find, or remove any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.

Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.

The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.

Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this thread, Using the Post Reply: feature, so I will be notified.

Note: Do not attempt to "Fix" anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without revisions.
Piatan-

I couldn't find the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruzfjef.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\l?gonui.exe The "?" could be anything.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm
I did delete the Program files you told me to delete though.

Here's my log.

Hi cman2006;
Your HJT logfile seems to be clean. Is your PC running well ?

Those files you couldn't find, seem to be missing, so no worries there.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :D
