G'Day Mate :) and welcome to TomCoyote forum. I can't see the hijacker but I do see a trojan: O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows] system.exe see this: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-8096.html and this: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…spybot.obb.html You might want to look over that information in the event the bugger has made any changes to your system you have to correct. We will take a good look because HJT can't see everything but first a couple of things.

Your HJT needs a permanent folder and yours looks like this: C:\tmp\HijackThis.exe Return to C:\ and RIGHT click on a blank spot and make a NEW FOLDER. Move the HijackThis.exe into to NEW FOLDER achieving this: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe Then the HJT.exe is outdated. You can updated from within the software like this: To update HJT, open the program, then click on Config to the right. Then on the top line, choose Misc Tools.
On the left column choose "Check for update online". Follow the instructions.

Please follow these instruction in the posted order:

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions on the download page and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php Please do not activate TeaTimer until we are finished with the repair.
If you have Ad-aware 1.06, and Spybot 1.04 and you are updated and configured as in the link, fine, if not please do so any run both programs again. Thanks.
3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

4) Run CCleaner but do not use the registry cleaner unless you backup the registry first as prompted for safety. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log using version 1.99.1 along with the Ewido scan log this same thread along with any feedback you have. We may have more to do?

Cheers…pskelley

best regards

Hello jimbo7350, Good job following those directions, just a little more to do. You have this trojan onboard: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-8096.html This worm may have made changes in your system that you will need to correct, see this information: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen…spybot.obb.html

Please follow these directions:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows] system.exe
W32.Spybot.OBB

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

SHOW HIDDEN FILES: Follow the instructions in the link to enable hidden files for your operating system.
You may wish to reverse this process if you have any concern about anyone getting into these hidden system files.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

You will need look for this one: system.exe >>> file
The Symantec link says this: Note: %System% is a variable that refers to the System folder. By default this is C:\Windows\System (Windows 95/98/Me), C:\Winnt\System32 (Windows NT/2000), or C:\Windows\System32 (Windows XP).
So it should be here: C:\Windows\System32\system.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Run CCleaner again and make sure it is set to clean all Temporary files and Temporary Internet Files. When you run the registry cleaner, "Issues", if anything is located for removal, when you remove it you will be prompted to backup the registry first. Make sure you do so.

Restart the computer and post a last HJT log for me to view. Let me know how you are running now.

Since your System Restore files were very well corrupted by this trojan, follow these instructions to clean them out:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Thanks…pskelley

G'Day Jim, That's strange about the location, Symantec is usually right on with their locations. Seems that you have removed it successfully. I did a search for the item: system.exe (make sure hidden files are enabled) and returned nothing on my Windows Xp SP2 Dell. Would you please run a search also and if any instance is found let me know about it. My search did not locate system.exe on either WinXp SP1(Pro) or Win XpSP 2 (Home) Thanks.

I will have to assume you have reviewed the information about the damage that may have been caused by this worm. If not you should do do so now because it will help you better understand the possible damage. I am moving a little out of my area of limited expertise, but I will make a few suggestion as a result of some personal knowledge.

1) As I said, review the Symantec article about this worm from top to bottom to better understand the possible damage that the worm may have caused. I would update Tread Micro and run a complete system scan.

2) Have your Windows CD handy and scan for any damaged or missing files like this: Click Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow, hit Enter.
Note: there is a space between sfc and /scannow
This should replace any corrupted/missing system files and will hopefully fix things. You will need your XP disc in your CD drive for this.
Let me know if that helps.

3) Make sure all Security Center items are up and running, a port check may be in order, that can be done here: http://www.dslreports.com/scan or here: https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

4) Run your maintence programs: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen…mb_tol_vvcu.asp

5) A check at PCPitStop to see if their scan spots any issues would be good: http://www.pcpitstop.com/

6) Jim, you keep mentioning

MS Outlook: still slow at start up and ms outlook

are you talking about Outlook Express or the office program "Outlook" If it is Outlook Express, that is part if Internet Explorer and you might try this repair: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
If it is "Outlook" I have never used the product and you will have to consult MS Tech Support.

7) A last thought would be to discuss this infection with the Tech Support at Trend Micro to see what they suggest. These worms often compromise antivirus programs and a fresh download of the software may be in order. I would see what they have to say.

8) Last…here are a few ideas about how to speed up Windows XP at startup: http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea…rs_article.html

and since you have a clean HJT log at this point, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
